Ousmane Dembele arrived at Barcelona with highest of expectations and promise. A stellar campaign which saw the Frenchman score 6 and assist 12 in 32 games for Dortmund earned him a move to the Nou Camp in 2017. €105 million just a year after joining Die Borussen from Rennes. This was a testament to how highly rated he was (and still is).
But since the switch from Germany to Spain, Dembele has struggled. The talent and quality is evident, no-one questions that. But a multitude of reasons have meant the now 22 year old hasn’t proven his worth as of yet.
The main reason why his development has halted is injuries. His luck with fitness has been horrendous for the Blaugrana. 7 injuries in the last 2 years have meant the winger has been unable to get a consistent run of games. In fact, it’s now 8 after he suffered yet another setback two days ago. This latest thigh injury is set to keep him out for 3 months. Awful luck.
Hamstring, ankle and more recently thigh injuries. The legs of Dembele sadly seem to be made of glass. It’s heartbreaking to see injuries ruin the career of such talented players. Abou Diaby at Arsenal for example. Had the potential to be world class, but the poor guy could hardly make the match day squad. Let’s hope this string of injuries will end for Ousmane.
But even though his luck has been bad with injuries, there are other factors too why it’s working out. Factors that the French international himself has to take responsibility for:
Ousmane Dembele – Bad attitude
“On the pitch he’s a phenomenon. It’s up to him where he ends up, he could be one of the best.”Lionel Messi on Dembele (source: Wikipedia)
That’s an incredible compliment from the greatest of all time. But it’s also a kick in the teeth for Dembele. ‘It’s up to him’ sums up the attacker. Attitude has been a problem for him, since his time with Dortmund. Failing to turn up to training in order to force his move to Catalonia through set a precedent. The precedent of a troublemaker.
The two footed winger’s lack of professionalism has meant not all Barcelona fans have taken him. GOAL’s article HERE goes into far more depth. But things such as turning up late to training, gaming addictions, not eating healthily. You’re a professional footballer for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Have some respect and be grateful for the position so many would long to be in. It’s so frustrating when a player’s mentality is limiting them from reaching the next level.
There’s still time to make amends…
The funny thing is, when he has played, Dembele has normally been excellent. Flair, able to shoot with both feet, an eye for a pass and mesmerising dribbling. The perfect Neymar replacement that’s so fun to watch in full flow.
Ousmane Dembele 2018/19 La Liga stats:
However, his ceiling is so high and with the talent he has, he could be a world beater. The heir to Messi’s throne. Perhaps working harder in training, becoming more disciplined and better luck with injuries could see one of the world football’s most exciting prospects realise his potential. That’s what we hope at least…
