Why Ryan Fraser is exactly who Liverpool need

Following Liverpool’s tactical deconstruction of Premier League champions Manchester City yesterday (bar a couple of questionable decisions), it may come as shock to many to see them in advanced talks with Ryan Fraser. According to Talksport, Liverpool are at ‘the front of the queue’ for the Scotsman. But do they need him?

Fraser is yet to have hit the heights of last season, managing just one goal and two assists in Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side. However, after last summer’s rigorous tussle for the wide man, interest is still clearly there. Last campaign was the highlight of the 25 year-old’s career so far, featuring in all 38 Premier League games, scoring 7 times, but perhaps more remarkably: mustering 14 (FOURTEEN) assists.

Fraser dances away from many with ease.

Arsenal were interested. Manchester United were keen. Chelsea looked eager, but then again they were into anyone that could run at one point. Nevertheless, it looks like Liverpool will be the preferred destination. Ryan Fraser’s contract is out in the summer, meaning that Bournemouth have to sell. But how can he possibly be exactly what Liverpool need?

Style of Play

Short and stocky with an eagerness to come inside onto his stronger foot, at first glance Ryan Fraser may seem like a carbon copy of current ‘outcast’ Xherdan Shaqiri. This is not accurate. Possessing a more cutting edge than the Swiss international, Fraser has lightning pace, allowing him to pull full backs right to the byline. This, alongside his strong weaker foot, means that he plays perfectly into Liverpool’s style of play.

Andy Robertson’s bombing overlaps down the left would work wonders with his Scottish compatriot, as Fraser’s unpredictability means that the defender can’t commit to the cut inside or the lay-off for Robertson. Deadly.

Furthermore, the fact that Fraser already plays in a high-energy squad, led by a charismatic leader, means that it shouldn’t take him long to adapt to Liverpool’s style of play.

The eye for goal and the capability of producing a cross are both key traits Klopp must look for in a winger. Ryan Fraser fits it perfectly. At a cut-price thanks to Bournemouth’s inability to get him to sign a contract means Fraser will most likely be one of the bargains of the January transfer window.
