He was simply sublime for Norwich in the Championship. He then impressed in debut Premier League campaign for Leicester. Now, James Maddison is well in the England set up and among the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League. Alongside that, A certain Manchester United are interested in the Leicester star.
The 21-year-old was among the elite in the second tier of English football 2 years ago, scoring 14 and assisting 8 to guide the Canaries to a 14th place finish. In 2018/19, the Englishman scored 7 and assisted 7 for the Foxes in a difficult season on and off the pitch for the club.
Now with 4 contributions in 8 games, he’s set to have a stellar 2019/20 at the heart of an exciting and threatening Leicester City team.
Manchester United are at their lowest point in 30 years. 14th in the table, an inexperienced manager and without doubt their worst squad since the Premier League began. They’re begging for creativity to help an overburdened Paul Pogba in midfield as well as someone to create a moment of magic.
The former Coventry City midfielder fits the bill, perfectly. MEN are reporting that the Red Devils are ‘optimistic’ over signing him and he fits Solskjaer’s criteria of young British players with massive talent. This could be a massive signing by the former Premier League champions and here’s why:
As mentioned before, Maddison has been potent in front of goal. 15 goals all competitions in 2017/18 demonstrated how clinical he was for Norwich. This season in 2019/20, he’s taking 3.3 shots per game and with 2 goals so far, including the long range winner against Spurs, he’s so dangerous when given the space. Leicester have been incredible this season, currently 3rd in the table and the Coventry youth product has been a massive part of that.
But not only is Maddison a competent goal scorer, but he is also a superb creator. 1.6 key passes per game and his 2 assists so far highlight his role as a playmaker alongside a goal scorer. With the huge reliance on Pogba to pull the strings of a sluggish United side, Maddison would ease that burden on the Frenchman whilst give something for the Old Trafford faithful to cheer about.
Before Kieran Trippier sent the nation into euphoria for 63 minutes in the semi-final, England did not have a specialist free-kick taker. Despite Trippier showing his ability on the big stage, Maddison is also a set-piece specialist. 2 direct free kick goals against Bournemouth and Huddersfield last season showed his capability when striking a dead ball.
United fans are sick to death of Marcus Rashford pelting the ball over the wall and into Row Z. With the Leicester attacking midfielder over the ball, the chances of it hitting the backing the net are far more likely. Also, devastating corner balls into the box to meet Harry Maguire’s massive head. He seems perfect for the red of Manchester.
The Foxes are notorious for getting the highest prices for their star players. Maguire, Mahrez, Kante at the time, the list goes on. I suspect Maddison won’t be an exception to that. It could take £100 million to take him out of the King Power. But if Manchester United are ‘the biggest club in the world’ and want to return to their former glories, making a high profiles signing in the form of the England international would be a good start.
