After the end of Rafa Benitez’s era of stability, Steve Bruce’s tenure has brought a mixed bag of results to Newcastle. Highs of wins against Tottenham and Manchester United. Lows of poor results against Norwich and Watford. But regardless, they’re lacking presence in midfield, so it’s no surprise they’re targeting Ibrahima Sissoko.
But who is this midfielder from Ligue 1 and what could he bring to Tyneside? We’ll give you the run down:
The young midfielder has spent his whole career in France, in the first and second divisions more specifically. After impressing in Ligue 2 with Brest, top tier side Strasbourg saw the ability of the French U21 international, signing him in 2018.
In a struggling Strasbourg side dwelling near the bottom of the table, currently 16th in the table and 1 point above the relegation zone, Sissoko has been one of the shining lights. Having made over 30 appearances in all competitions last season, he’s an established figure in the side. He’s even made 4 appearances in the Europa League this season and is only going to get better.
Ibrahima Sissoko – Style of Play
When Scouting Football make a video on you, you know you’re a young talent.
At 6ft 4, the Frenchman has a massive physical presence in midfield. He shrugs off his midfield counterparts like they’re not there and tends to dominate the middle of the park on most cases.
In the video above, Sissoko makes powerful runs across the pitch and just moves with such ease. That fast transition from defense to attack is something Newcastle are crying out for. Movements like this to hit teams on the counter attack could be instrumental in their survival.
But alongside his physical attributes, the former Brest midfielder is very neat technically. He showcases his range of passing in the video, long range shooting and impressive footwork for such a large guy.
Based on what I’ve seen in the video, I would liken him to Yaya Toure. The way he glides through midfield, bullies players on the pitch and then contributes to the attack, he looks like a very good all round player. £13 million could be shrewd signing for Newcastle and a great move for Sissoko.
