He’s 23 years old, scores goals like they’re going out of fashion, and looks available for a move away. Timo Werner has refused a contract from RB Leipzig. A move to Bayern every summer seems inevitable. However that still hasn’t materialised. Now, Premier League clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea are reportedly in for the star striker.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds are now a rumoured potential destination for Timo Werner. Bayern Munich are of course always throw their name in the hat. But according to German journalist Raphael Honigstein, the Bavarians are no longer in for the 23 year old. Door open for a move to the English top tier?
Either way, here’s our profile on the highly rated Stuttgart youth product:
Timo Werner – Style of Play
Starting at VfB Stuttgart from a very young age, he quickly became the youngest debutant and goalscorer in Die Schwaben’s history. A move to Leipzig in summer 2016 for a fee of around €10 million. The move wasn’t the most popular domestically with Red Bull’s reputation in Germany. However the transfer has been a roaring success for the club and Werner’s career.
The pacey striker, who can also be deployed out wide, found the net 21 times in the league, the highest German goalscorer that year. Not bad at 21 years old. He’s taken it to another level in 2019/20, with more goals than appearances. As the title of the article says, he’s tearing up the Bundesliga.
Timo Werner 2019/20 so far (Bundesliga):
Appearances – 22
Goals – 20
Assists – 6
There’s a reason he is nicknamed ‘Turbo Timo’. Clocked running 100m in 11.11 seconds, there’s no doubt his lightning speed would add heaps to any attack in the Premier League.
As the video shows, Werner is an excellent finisher. With his head, right foot, left foot, you name it. That scintillating pace coupled with his silky dribbling is why he’s good out wide, alongside as a striker. When he cuts inside onto his right in the video, you already know where the shot’s going. Top corner. The combination of flair with composure of a striker with a killer instinct.
Thought he isn’t the strongest physically, at 5ft 11, he isn’t completely redundant with crosses into the box. The strength and physicality of the Premier League could take him by surprise. But we’ve seen Sergio Aguero rule the league for the last 10 years. Werner fits that mould of player and could do the same.
“First he would play it to my right foot, and we’d work on my technique with that, and then to my left. We even ran up mountains together. I learnt quickly that if you want to become a professional, you have to do more.”Werner on his dad and growing up. This Man Has Drive.
Timo Werner would be fantastic wherever he goes. Considering his contract situation, clubs can get him for cheap. Probably less than £50 million. Whoever does get him though, they will have a top striker on their hands. I have no doubts about it.
