According to Sky Sports, Bayern Munich have offered Arsenal the opportunity to sign World Cup winning central defender Jérôme Boateng. For people less familiar, this is what he’d bring to the thirteen-time Premier League champions…
The 31 year-old has a reported value of £13m, and Arsenal seem interested. With his contract slowly running down, Bayern may just sell whilst they can.
Seven Bundesliga titles. Four DFB Pokal’s. A Champions League trophy and a World Cup too. It’s fair to say that Jérôme Boateng has won it all. However, apart from an incredibly brief stint at Manchester City almost ten years ago, he has never really tested himself in the Premier League. Could he head down south for the tail end of his career?
This season has seen his involvement decline, with Niko Kovac and now Hans-Dieter Flick seeing him as his fourth choice centre-half. His constant battles with injuries certainly haven’t helped. Nevertheless, he has featured five times for the German champions, averaging two tackles and two interceptions per game. Not too shabby.
Furthermore, it’s his renowned quality ON the ball that has made him such a prized asset in a possession-heavy Munich side. He averages a staggering EIGHTY-TWO passes per game, and five long balls. Alongside David Luiz, his ability to switch the play and find teammates in more advanced positions could be vital.
It is clear that paying upwards of £13m for a central defender does not present a huge risk and if they are to propel themselves back up the Premier League, maybe it’s exactly what they need – an assured player at the back.
