Vinicius Junior: Does Real Madrid prospect need a loan away?

Vinicius Junior made headlines all over the footballing world in 2017. 17 years old, signed by Real Madrid for a staggering €46 million. A truly ridiculous sum of money for a teenager. But if nothing else, it was a testament to the sheer talent of the Brazilian. After 4 goals and 3 assists in just 12 games for Flamengo, Vinicius arrived at Los Blancos in 2018. His first season was promising with flair, excitement and impressive performances.

But 2019/20 has been challenging for the attacker. The promise and excitement around the Brazilian international was been overshadowed by his national compatriot Rodrygo. His hat trick in the Champions League and regular appearances under Zinedine Zidane have meant Vinicius has struggled to break back into the Madrid first team. With the plethora of wide quality the side have, perhaps the now 19 year old needs to leave the Bernabeu to gets some minutes under his belt?

According to El Desmarque, there are several clubs interested in the winger. This includes the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and PSG. There doesn’t seem to be any stumbling blocks in a loan deal for Vinicius. He needs minutes, whilst clubs like The Blues need reinforcements out wide.

Vinicius Junior – Style of Play

His upright posture on the ball lends Vinicus a certain unpredictability in his movement. A headache for defenders. What gives him that further edge over other wide players is his confidence; losing the ball does not shake him. Similar to Wilfried Zaha in that aspect. Despite only averaging two dribbles in La Liga this season (WhoScored), he is capable of a more dynamic and direct approach should Zidane allow it.

What needs to improve, like most young prospects in an advanced position, is his finishing. Whilst capable of cutting in from the left wing and firing into that far right corner, he obviously doesn’t do that with an Arjen Robben-style consistency. This means that he needs to finish other types of chances. Of course this comes with age, so there is no need to worry. Kylian Mbappé is probably the only youngster I have seen with that deadly finish from such a young age (let me know more, please!), so there is no need to panic when the Brazilian misses a chance or two.

There is plenty of time for Vinicius to develop and, given adequate playing time, we are sure to see him reach the pinnacle of football sooner rather than later. Whether or not this comes from a loan move is another question altogether…
