Unai Emery: Dead man walking at Arsenal after Frankfurt defeat

If it wasn’t known before it certainly is now. Unai Emery HAS to leave Arsenal Football Club. Tonight’s loss to Eintracht Frankfurt must be the coup de grâce in Emery’s quite frankly torrid time at the Emirates.

The 48-year-old Spaniard had his unbeaten run of last season, but aside from that, I haven’t seen anything that shows progress for the North London club. The Gunners, arguably, have one of the best squads in the Premier League; certainly attacking-wise. However, Emery’s incapability of managing players, particularly Mesut Özil had him against it from the start.

It was his demand for hard work that isolated the German World Cup Winner, who is often known for his domineering creative displays. Emery’s sides may cover more ground but they don’t win football matches. That’s a problem.

Mesut Özil and Unai Emery never saw eye to eye.

Preferring to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, Unai Emery has failed to actively find a formation that works, instead relying on individual brilliance from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to dig him out of games. A lack of creativity against a low-block, Arsenal’s captivating football had run dry. Unai Emery has used EIGHT different formations in his last eight games. Unsustainable.

When Unai Emery arrived at Arsenal, it was assumed that the priority would be to clear up the defensive woes not even Arsene Wenger could fix. Instead, The Gunners have one of the shakiest defences in the league. It is time for him to depart the club before more irreparable damage is done. He tried his best, and some of the comments and mockeries over social media have been unwarranted. Nevertheless, his unsuccessful stint at Arsenal looks to be over.

Who’s next for Arsenal? No one can really say right now. With Nuno Espirito Santo looking to stay at Wolves, will we see Mikel Arteta return to North London, this time in the shape of a suit and tie, rather than boots and shinpads? We will be covering this when Emery has gone, but for now, we wait…
