Thomas Lemar: Profile of Atletico Madrid and French winger

Thomas Lemar was in high demand in 2017. Several of Europe’s top clubs were interested in the winger, who played an important part in Monaco’s Ligue 1 title triumph. Mbappe, Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Fabinho. Most of that star studded squad left soon after. Yet the Frenchman didn’t, in fact he wasn’t allowed to. Reported bids from Arsenal and Liverpool were rejected by Monaco in 2017. It took until 2018 for Lemar to leave Ligue 1, for €60 million to Atletico Madrid.

Since then, the 24 year old has struggled in La Liga. Just 4 goals and 3 assists in 43 games across all competitions was an underwhelming start to life in Spain. It’s got even worse in 2019/20. 0 goal contributions in 15 La Liga games shows how far he’s fallen off since starring in the French top tier. No doubt, he’s been a flop for Los Rojiblancos. But perhaps he needs a change of scenery. Maybe England, more specifically the Premier League:

According to multiple reports, including The Metro, Jorge Mendes is working on a move for the World Cup winner to Arsenal. As aforementioned, the Gunners were interested in him during his time in Monaco. A replacement for Alexis Sanchez at the time. However, now with Mikel Arteta at the Emirates, this interest has been renewed.

Writing about Lemar’s time in Spain would be a sentence long. He’s been dreadful. So much so, the former Caen winger has been reduced to substitute appearances. So, we’ll give you a run down on the winger we saw light up Europe for Les Monégasques, with the hopes he returns to form (if a move to London materialises):

Thomas Lemar – Style of Play

Lemar was a joy to watch for Monaco, particularly in 2016/17, their league winning season. 9 goals and 10 assists in 34 league games are a testament to how dangerous the French international is. The mesmerising dribbling, set piece specialism and technical ability. He’s the definition of a playmaker that also isn’t afraid to test the keeper.

In 2016/17, the Atletico midfielder averaged an impressive 2.2 key passes per game. He himself says his aim is to concentrate on passing rather than taking on defenders. A team player, something that fits the Arsenal philosophy perfectly. Lemar may not be lightning quick. However, he has a decent enough turn of pace coupled fast feet to turn defenders inside out. A very skilful and tricky player that is so exciting to watch in full flow.

“I am trying to avoid duels and concentrate on passing as much as possible.”

The former Monaco midfielder isn’t just a pass merchant either. He also hits the ball sweetly, particularly from long range. Multiple times in the video, the 24 year old shows his prowess from outside the box. 1.7 shots per game in 2016/17 too, defenders can’t afford to give him space from range. Otherwise, it’s going into the top corner.

Worth a punt?

Obviously this was 3 years ago. A long time ago especially in football. But I feel under a positive manager that wants to play attacking football like Arteta, Thomas Lemar could be an excellent signing for Arsenal. Rumours are over a loan with option to buy, which would be perfect. No risk with potentially high reward if it works out.

For me, this deal works for all parties involved. Atletico want him off the books, the Gunners need reinforcements and Lemar needs a chance to show Europe why he was so highly rated not too long ago. Get it done!
