Ruben Neves – Profile of Portugal and Wolves midfielder

Wolverhampton Wanderers are playing an attractive game. 7th in the Premier League and have qualified for playoffs in the Europa League. Great way to build off last season’s success. The campaign comes on the basis of a tightly knit group of professionals, among them Portuguese coaching staff and players. Ruben Neves is one of them, the backbone of the team.

The midfielder rose through Porto’s youth academy. He scored on his professional debut, at the age of 17. He even captained this side in the Champions League at 18. But Neves shocked the world, when he joined then Championship-side Wolves’ in 2017 for £15.8 million. A record-breaking fee for the second tier.

The Portuguese-international was outstanding in the league, scoring 6 goals. All of them from outside of the box. Trademark Ruben Neves. He was also nominated for the Player of the Year award. The 22 year old has been linked to United since 2018. Mourinho was keen to add the Porto youth product to his squad during his time with the Red Devils. The Special One praised Neves’ pressing skills after 1-1 draw with Wolves’ at Old Trafford.

Ruben Neves – Style of Play

“Ruben Neves has extraordinary mental qualities, to go along with technical and tactical skills. He is a player who has the ability to read and understand the game, and then react.”

Luis Castro – manager of Shakhtar Donetsk, former manager of Porto’s reserves.

Neves is one of the most talented Portuguese players of his generation. He possesses the ball in a mesmerising manner. In the Premier League, his dispossession rate per game is only 0.2, one of the lowest among midfielders. The midfielder likes to play long-balls and is gifted with exceptional passing range and vision. For the Wanderers, he plays as a deep-lying playmaker, aided with his ability to make quick decisions with or without the ball.

Ruben Neves creates a solid midfield line along with his compatriot Joao Moutinho and often carries out defensive duties. 1.2 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game aren’t magnificent. But stopping opponents every single attack isn’t his direct responsibility. Precise passing, positioning and build-up play are his strengths. He often goes forward to support attackers and he’s an accomplished long-range shooter. Something we have seen MANY times in the last 2 seasons.

What the future holds for him

Undoubtedly Solskjaer needs new faces in the team. Most importantly in midfield, especially after Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba’s injuries. With how thin their squad is, there’s an evident lack of quality. Rumours of a possible Ruben Neves transfer along teammate Raul Jimenez have emerged. One year ago there were rumours about possible Manchester City transfer. But Pep Guardiola said that he would not spend £100 million on Neves.

United’s move for Ruben Neves highly depends on their other transfer activity. Multiple credible sources are linking them with Bruno Fernandes again. Whilst Jack Grealish and James Madison continue to be linked with the Red Devils. He will probably leave the club in the near future. But if he abstains from moving to a better club in January, he might receive even better opportunities in the next transfer window.
