Player Profiles: Nabil Fekir

After yet another stellar season with 24 goals and 9 assists, Nabil Fekir looks set to leave Olympic Lyon with a host of clubs interested in his signature. He is subject of serious interest from Liverpool whilst Manchester United are also rumoured to be in for the French international.

Discussions between Fekir and Liverpool took place at the start of the window, yet never materialized. Yet Liverpool have revived their interest in the attacking midfielder with fees upwards of £50 million floating around media outlets.

Nabil Fekir is Lyon through and through being an academy graduate as well as at the club since the age of 12. He truly established himself as a talent in the 2014-15 season scoring 13 times and laying on a further 9 assists. This earned him a spot in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year and the award of Young Player of the Year, a brilliant season for the then 21 year old.

Fekir was set for a move away from the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, yet torn knee ligaments meant he missed the majority of the following season and had to catch the eye of Europe’s giants, who had forgotten about him, yet again.

He did not fail to impress and returned to the spotlight with 10 goals and 10 assists in the 2016-17 season. Once again though, he remained at Lyon with no concrete interest from clubs. In the 2017/18 season, Fekir was named club captain and lived up to his responsibility with numbers skyrocketing to over 30 goals contributions in all competitions, hence tempting clubs such as Liverpool to break the bank for his services.

Fekir is a very versatile forward able to be deployed on both wings, as a striker and a central attacking midfielder. If he was to join Liverpool, dislodging any one of Liverpool’s devastating front three would be difficult. With Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and of course Mohammed Salah being Europe’s most feared strike force last season, Fekir may initially struggle to play week in week out, which for a player of his calibre may be a deterrent to join Anfield. However, he certainly provides squad depth and competition for Jurgen Klopp’s side who are currently so heavily reliant on their attack. He has the ability to both score and provide goals which may allow him to cement his position as a starting midfielder (if not a forward).

For Fekir, who is yet to win silverware in his career, joining Liverpool would be an exciting prospect. The Champions League finalists of last season are bolstering their squad with signings such as Fabinho and the acquisition of Fekir would be nothing less. They are favourites alongside Manchester City to win the Premier League this season and a move for Nabil Fekir to Anfield would be a step forward in his promising career.
