Moussa Dembele: Profile of Lyon striker dominating Ligue 1

Chelsea’s young core have shocked the Premier League this season with their performances, even if they have had a slight blip of lately. Even some of the old guard like Willian have performed well. But the bumps in the road will start to show for Frank. With Olivier Giroud seemingly on his way out of Stamford Bridge as he vies to get himself first team football for the Euros, Frank Lampard is lining up Moussa Dembele of Lyon to provide competition for Tammy Abraham.

There have been murmurings around the football community as to who Frank wants to sign ever since Chelsea’s transfer ban was lifted. As you can expect, their name has been thrown in for essentially anyone in the market, because it generates clicks. However, this seems like a concrete link now.

Moussa Dembele in action for Lyon

Sky’s Kaveh Solhekol, has just tweeted that Chelsea are willing to pay £34 million for Dembele, having had a bid rejected by Lyon for the striker. Solhekol has proven to be a largely accurate source in the past. So Dembele to Chelsea isn’t just paper talk, it looks like a genuine interest.

With Tammy performing to such a level that Giroud hasn’t had a sniff – 14 goals in 25 games (PL + UCL), it is inevitable that the target man would want to leave. Additionally, Michy Batshuayi is rumoured to be wanting a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Moussa Dembele – Style of play

It is said Lampard sees a bit of Drogba in Moussa Dembele. The tenacity that Didier brought to that mid 2000s Chelsea side. Able to occupy a pairing of CBs and cause them headaches all afternoon long. I do see the comparisons once I analyse his highlights. I see a striker who can stretch the game consistently when fed the right service and the fact he is adept with both feet causes defenders problems once he penetrates.

As seen in the video, he takes up effective positions during his team’s buildup, meaning you shouldn’t be screaming at him to latch onto one of Reece James’ peach-perfect crosses. It is no joke that Moussa is a natural goalscorer, in every sense of the word. A proper fox-in-the-box.

Why is Frank after him?

Even in his youth, Moussa Dembele was a household name. He made the switch from PSG to London in 2012 at the tender age of 16. Fulham faithful were excited about the youngster they were able to pry away from the bright lights of Paris. He would go on to score 15 goals in 56 competitive games, before his move to Celtic occurred. All these 15 goals came in the 43 games he played in his last season at Craven Cottage,

He was a key part of Celtic’s pure dominance recently, scoring 26 goals in 55 games for The Bhoys. Moussa hadn’t even spent a whole season with the Scottish champions when there was speculation around his future. Coincidentally, Antonio Conte was apparently tracking the Frenchman, but Moussa sensationally announced he was staying at Celtic Park with this extraordinary tweet…

Now it has all changed. A move to Lyon and 10 goals in 18 games this season already has him postered for another move. Back to the same area of London, but for a club fighting for Champions League football, not promotion from the Championship (sorry Fulham). Frank wants him, that’s for sure. But can Chelsea bring him in this January? That remains to be seen…
