Luka Jovic: Will Real Madrid flop jump ship?

According to Duncan Castles on Twitter, Real Madrid are interested in signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Arsenal. But could the bigger deal be in who goes the other way. They are ready to offer the Gunners Luka Jovic...

In February 2016, Benfica paid Red Star a measly £2m for their prize possession. Despite Luka only being 18 years old at the time, £2m was still seen as an incredibly low figure. A season with the reserve team and a loan spell later, Luka Jović is one of the hottest prospects in football.

Luka Jovic – The Deal That Changed His Career

Jović had joined German side Eintracht Frankfurt on a two-year loan deal.  Die Adler have since exercised their right to a permanent transfer. The 2017/18 season was stop-start, Jović making 21 appearances, 13 of those from the bench. Eight goals, including the winner in the semi-finals of their winning DFB Pokal cup run, against Schalke, was not bad for a twenty-year-old playing his first season in the German First Division. However, 2018/19 had been a different animal entirely…

On 19th October, Luka Jović put the world on notice. Still just 20 years of age, he became the youngest player to score five goals in a Bundesliga game (7-1 win v Fortuna Dusseldorf). What caught my eye was the manner of the goals, especially his first: an acrobatic overhead/scissor kick of sorts. The way he strikes the ball gives me goosebumps, instantly drawing comparisons to the one other man that can have that effect: Mauro Icardi.

A man Luka Jovic may look up to: Mauro Icardi.

The Serbian’s relentless pursuit for success led him to 25 goals in all competitions last season, catching the eyes of Europe’s elite this summer. At the front of the queue, Real Madrid, who acquired the 21 year old’s signature for €60 million. A true ‘Galactico’ signing. He was thought to be the spearhead of an exciting Los Blancos side undergoing a significant rebuild under Zinedine Zidane. This has not been the case…

Can he already be given another fresh start? Real Madrid are, as always, desperate for instant success, and Aubameyang is seen as their main man. Already offering Jovic is an interesting proposition for multiple parties. Arsenal will be gifted a talented 21 year old goalscorer. One they can’t turn down.

All remains to be seen, and we will follow this closely as the January transfer window opens.
