Lorenzo Pellegrini: One to Watch

According to Football Italia, Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini is on the radar of Tottenham Hostpur. Spurs eye a Christian Eriksen replacement and he could be the man. Eriksen’s contract runs out in the summer, so he is likely to depart North London in January for a reduced fee. But who is Pellegrini, and what can he bring to Tottenham Hotspur?

Born and bred in Rome, Pellegrini suffered from arrhythmia when he was young; meaning that he had an irregular heartbeat. However, his sheer determination got him round it and now cardiovascular fitness is now one of his most prominent attributes.

Moving to Sassuolo, it didn’t take long before Pellegrini began to show signs of true quality and, two years after departing the Stadio Olimpico, he was welcomed back with open arms. He has only kicked on further…

Style of Play

Now this is an interesting one. A ‘replacement’ for Christian Eriksen indicates that he will operate in an advanced midfield role. This is odd as, despite beginning to find his feet further forward, Pellegrini is more of a box-to-box midfielder – finding comfort in both the defending and attacking phases on the pitch – perhaps thanks to his role as a central defender in his youth.

Dynamic and hardworking, the 23 year-old possesses a plethora of technical skills. Combine this with his 6ft 2in frame and this makes him what could be perceived as the ‘perfect midfielder’. Furthermore, his late runs into the box to get onto the end of cutbacks have found him drawing similarities to Frank Lampard. A star in the making.

Lorenzo Pellegrini of Roma celebrating.

Averaging 2.6 key passes per game is a ridiculous feat for a player that usually operates from a slightly deeper role. Six games in to his Serie A season and he already has four assists. No goals yet, however, but with the Italian firing on all cyclinders, it won’t be long before they start flying in.

It is difficult to make assumptions as the pace of the Premier League is sometimes so difficult to acclimatise to. Energetic and technical skilful, we should see Lorenzo Pellegrini in England sometime.
