Japhet Tanganga has burst onto the scene out of nowhere. A shock inclusion in the game against Liverpool, the debutant impressed against arguably the world’s best front 3. Now today after a Man of the Match performance in the FA Cup, the defender has taken his chance. We’re seeing why Jose Mourinho has put so much faith in him already.
Thrown in the deep end, and swimming!
The 20 year old was called into action immediately against the reigning European Champions. A clearance off the line just minutes into the game at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, Tanganga didn’t let the occasion get to him. A 1-0 defeat for Spurs against Liverpool isn’t something to be ashamed of. On another day if either Son or Lo Celso managed to tap in their chances, we’d be calling it a Mourinho masterclass.
But today too, the Tottenham youth product was excellent. Granted Middlesborough aren’t the toughest test. However Tanganga proved the performance against Liverpool wasn’t a fluke. He was confident going forward, always intending to go forward and run at the Boro defence. The right back looks physically strong with a turn of pace too. Tottenham fans will hope he can dislodge Aurier as the team’s first team right-back.
As I mentioned, he was confident going forward. According to this BBC report, the England U20 international had the most touches out of any player, alongside 1 key pass and an 82% pass completion rate. Defensively too, Tanganga was sound with 2 tackles and 3 interceptions. Yes it’s Middlesborough and only his 3rd game for Spurs. But the early signs are good for the right back.
Japhet Tanganga – The solution for Spurs?
Mourinho has a record of developing young defenders, even if people don’t give him credit for it. Varane, Zouma and now Spurs fans will hope, potentially Japhet Tanganga. There’s nothing Tottenham fans or Daniel Levy would want more than for a youth academy product to succeed. Saves a lot of money, which can then be spent on other areas of the squad that need addressing.
