Hwang Hee-Chan: Profile of South Korean RB Salzburg star

FC Red Bull Salzburg are the club on everyone’s footballing radar this season. For good reason too. They currently sit top of the Austrian Bundesliga, put up a strong showing in group E of the Champions League and now face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa league round of 32. Erling Håland’s recent move to Borussia Dortmund, for some, may have reduced the prospect of Salzburg progressing in the Europa League. On the opposing side of that argument is a seemingly endless conveyor belt of talent ready to fill the void the Norwegian has left. Albeit a mighty 6’4 void. Step forward Hwang Hee-Chan.

Erling Haaland signs for Borussia Dortmund

The 23 year-old South Korean international will be looking to emulate Håland in replacing a former talisman of the Austrian side, following Moanes Dabours €15 million transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2019. Can Hwag do it? Or is his future also away from the Stadion Wals-Siezenheim?

Hwang Hee-Chan – Style of Play

The versatile forward looks to possess all of the necessary skills required to test even the most proficient of defences. What really sets him from the pack are his abilities to link up play in the final third alongside his expert close control.

Hwang currently holds the record for most chances created from open play in the Champions League with 14. He’s in fine form with 9 goals and 14 assists across all competitions in 2019/2020. RB Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch could deploy Hwang as the focal point of the side’s attack. He could have the player stick to one position in order to further his development and continue to improve on his finishing ability.

DID YOU KNOW? Since the beginning of the 19/20 season Hwag is one of only two players with multiple goal involvements (1x G 1x A) against Liverpool in a single game. The other? Gabriel Martinelli, who bagged himself a brace in Arsenal’s quarter final defeat in the EFL Cup.

Door open for a move away?

However the club have secured the long term futures of attacking African trio Enock Mwepu, Patson Daka and Sekou Koita. Could this pave the way for Hwang to move away from Austria?

Hwang Hee-Chan in action for RB Salzburg

Sky Sports recently reported Wolves are interested in securing his services. The South Korean is valued at £23 million having been watched by the Wanderers’ sporting director. Hwang could join the illustrious list of exports to the Premier League from Salzburg. Sadio Mane, Naby Keïta and most recently Takumi Minamino. With or without a move the stage is set for Hwang Hee-Chan to light up the business end of the season and build upon his impressive showing thus far.
