Harvey Elliott: 16 year old Liverpool prospect shows his talent

With their Club World Cup commitments this week clashing with cup competitions, Liverpool were forced to field an incredibly youthful side for their Carabao Cup game against Aston Villa. An average age of 19 years, 6 months and 3 days. Truly remarkable by the red of Merseyside. The result was as expected from the team sheets. A 5-0 battering by the home side which sees the Villans cruise into the semi-finals. However, the shining light for the Reds in the game was the performance of Harvey Elliott.

The 16 (yes 16) year old was already making headlines last season for Fulham. His remarkable rise up the ranks meant he broke records for being the youngest ever player to play in the EFL Cup and the Premier League. Both in the same season, with the former being when he was 15 YEARS OLD. Clearly a serious talent that has an incredibly high ceiling, Liverpool signed him in the summer despite competition from the rest of Europe. Truly staggering where he is and what’s he already done at his age.

Harvey Elliott

Onto the game, with a chance to impress in a cup quarter final against Premier League opposition with Jurgen Klopp likely to be watching from afar, Elliott took it brilliantly. The Englishman performed brilliantly on the main stage, far beyond his years. A link to his highlights HERE.

Harvey Elliott – Performance vs Villa and style of play

The silky dribbling, blistering pace and confidence from the Fulham youth academy prospect was a joy to watch. Whenever he got on the ball, he looked dangerous. But the 16 year old didn’t waste possession or squander opportunities. Instead he was resourceful alongside putting on a great show.

The range of passing showcased by Elliott was excellent. Better finishing would’ve seen him bag at least 2-3 assists from perfectly weighted lobs and precise crosses. His movement was exceptional too, something that even the most talented technical players can lack. The England U17 international read the game well, knowing where his teammates were, what pass to play and having the intelligence to make the right decision. It’s a pity he couldn’t have a goal or an assist to his name, because the performance merited one.

Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott looks like a special player. Under Klopp, he could develop into an outstanding winger. The talent and technical ability is there. It’s just a question of natural progression for a player who’s so young and already has built up so much expectation. 16 years old, I still can’t get over that. The guy did his GCSEs this year, can’t buy a drink at a bar, can’t learn to drive. Yet he’s one of the hottest prospects in Europe. Crazy!
