Across Europe Eredivisie Football Player Profiles Premier League

Hakim Ziyech: Profile of the in-demand Moroccan Ajax midfielder

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea are in advanced talks with Ajax to sign Hakim Ziyech for £38 million. The player who was available and linked to everyone in summer on the cheap. Yet nothing materialised. But now it seems like the Moroccan will finally get the move away from Holland he’s been craving for.

So this midfield maestro has been talked about for a while now. Even before his time with Ajax, he shone for FC Twente with 30 goals and 27 assists in just 68 games for the Eredivisie side. Outstanding returns for a highly rated player, who only costed Ajax a measly €11 million. Incredible business by the Dutch giants.

Hakim Ziyech in action for Ajax

This season may have got off to a good start but last campaign is where Hakim Ziyech truly made his mark. 16 goals and 13 assists in 29 games in the Eredivisie for Ajax, and of course that amazing Champions League run. Ziyech was a catalyst in this spell and an endless line of potential suitors was drawn up over the summer. A move seemed imminent.

Yet Ziyech stayed put. This season he has been on top form once again. Twelve assists already in eighteen games. Just magnificent. In fact all four of his seasons in Amsterdam have been prolific. Sheer consistency and incredible output from perhaps one of the most underrated midfielders in Europe. Now approaching his prime at 26 years of age, the time is right for a move. A move to London by the looks of it.

Hakim Ziyech – Style of play

The 26-year-old is a magician on the ball. I’m sure you already have seen his delightful left peg and hawk-eyed vision. Averaging 3.4 key passes in all competitions is no mean feat and, with his significantly improved dribbling statistics (2.7 per game), Ziyech is still improving.

The question lies: can he do it in the Premier League? It’s always a tricky one when delegating over a potential transfer. We have seen our fair bunch of ‘flops’ in England’s top flight. The physicality and pace of the game can take a toll on new arrivals and we’ve seen even the greats need time to adapt. Saying that, Ziyech’s ability to resist the press and break into space is generational, and his eye for a pass in the final third makes him a world-class threat.

If Chelsea can get this deal over the line, what a signing it would be. We can’t wait to see Hakim Ziyech finally in the Premier League. Let’s see how this one turns out…
