Granit Xhaka made global football headlines 2 months ago. His actions during his substitution against Crystal Palace sparked outrage among Arsenal fans. We did a whole article on it at the time HERE. The slow trudging off, the ear cupping, the swearing. Gunners fans won’t forget that whenever they think of the Swiss international. Since then, he’s actually played well in an under-performing side. But will the 27 year old still be at the Emirates in January?
According to Sky in Germany a few days ago, Hertha Berlin want to sign Xhaka next month. Now, the German side have agreed terms with the midfielder according to his agent. After everything that has surrounded the midfielder since the game against Palace, a move away makes complete sense:
Granit Xhaka – Untenable position
His statement that came days after the incident seemed more like a justification rather than a sincere apology. That perhaps only caused more friction between him and the supporters. Moreover, getting the captaincy stripped off him by former boss Unai Emery must have been a huge dent to Xhaka’s pride. Coupled with the abuse directed towards his family, he looks like he needs this move away to get his career back on track. The last thing you want is your young family getting abused online from so-called ‘fans’.
Mikel Arteta has been appointed as Arsenal manager. Although he has spoken highly about his midfielder, the Spaniard might use Hertha’s interest as an opportunity to raise funds for a squad revamp in January. After all considering they’re willing to provide a ‘financially sensible package’, that money could go a long way for getting the defender the side so desperately needs.
The move makes sense for Granit Xhaka too. He’s been and done it in the Bundesliga before, a league that suits his style of play more than the fast paced Premier League. The 27 year old is reaching is prime soon, shining in Germany once again, this time in Berlin, could provide a stepping stone for another big move in the future. It hasn’t worked out in North London, but there’s still time for him to put his career back on track.
Every mistake the 82 time capped Switzerland international makes will be scrutinised, if he continues to play for Arsenal. He’ll always be scapegoated by the fans because of his reaction. Also, whenever he plays well, it’ll probably go under the radar because of his position. So, winning back the trust and love of the fans could take a long time. In my opinion, Xhaka should end him time at the Emirates and start afresh back in Germany.
