Frank Lampard: End of Chelsea honeymoon period?

After a rocky start to life back at Chelsea, Frank Lampard quickly got to grips with the Premier League. The Blues had been electric until recently, scoring goals galore and dominating teams. Their great form landed them a comfortable Top 4 cushion, several points clear of 5th place. However, a string of bad results has reduced that gap to only 3 points. The honeymoon period looks like it’s over for Super Frank.

4 losses in their last 5 Premier League games have brought Chelsea fans’ expectations back to where they were at the beginning of the season. Next week’s mouthwatering clash against Tottenham in North London is huge. A game against their bitter rivals fuelled by the man they once loved in Jose Mourinho as well as the respective league positions of both sides. After winning against Wolves today, a win against the Blues next week will see Spurs leapfrog them in the table. An incredible turnaround for the club since the Special One arrived less than a month ago.

Defensive woes

Chelsea are lacking creativity going forward, Mason Mount in particular has been struggling since his strong start early on. But something more concerning for Lampard is how poor they’ve been defensively. They’ve conceded 25 goals this season, more than any other team in the top 8. Fikayo Tomori has been impressive whenever he’s played, arguably their player of the season. Alongside Tammy Abraham of course. Antonio Rudiger played well against Bournemouth for only his second game this season after returning from injury.

Frank Lampard - Tomori

When Tomori returns, Chelsea’s defensive woes should be solved with a solid partnership between the Englishman and German. Beyond those two though, Zouma and Christensen are suspect. A January signing is NEEDED at the back for when one of their main defenders are unavailable.

Frank Lampard – The first test

The next few games will be a real test of Frank Lampard and his success in this job. How the former midfielder and his team bounce back after a rough patch will be interesting to see. Of course he’s outperformed expectations from the start of the season. But given the position they’ve been in and with this sudden drop-off, the reaction of him and his players could be season defining. It starts next week against his old boss…
