Francisco Trincao: A profile of the Barcelona winger

Francisco Trincao

A mesmerising left foot and comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo, Francisco Trincao has forever been courted on the Football Manager games. But now, dreams have become a reality.

Announced by Barcelona, Trincao will join La Blaugrana on 1st July, allowing the 20-year-old to finish this season at SC Braga. The fee is €31m (£26m). But who exactly is Barcelona’s new signing?

Born in Viana, Portugal, Trincao had to travel during his youth career, even spending time at FC Porto. However, once he arrived in Braga, he was there to stay. As soon as he made his debut at the backend of 2018 as a spritely 18-year-old, Francisco remained in the team, featuring countless times.

Francisco Trincao – Style of Play

First of all, I would like to say that the comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo are not accurate whatsoever. Trincao’s whole mannerism bares little resemblance to one of the greatest players of all time. Solely left-footed, he has a more guided precision to his game than power and lethality, rendering the Ronaldo conversation redundant. If anything, Trincao draws more to the style of Lionel Messi, that 6ft frame giving an untimely awkwardness to his dribbling.

Nevertheless, he is very effective one against one. Fast feet and scarily quick, he prefers to cut inside and carve open the defence via a clever through ball. It is really surprising that Trincao didn’t get his move sooner. Two goals and two assists in four starts for Braga this season is a fantastic return for the U21 international, but his offensive output as a whole is magnificent. 1.5 key passes per game exemplifies the young lad’s confidence to make that killer ball instead of just laying it off. Stats from WhoScored.

It’s hard to pinpoint exact weaknesses. A lack of defensive contribution is certainly one, but I think by now Barcelona know exactly how to deal with that. One thing could be the acclimatisation to the Camp Nou itself. Barcelona fans are known to be glorious when they’re playing well, but when it’s not going right, it can be hellish. Take Ousmané Dembélé for example. There will be a whole load of pressure on Trincao and this could impact him negatively.

Francisco Trincao may not solve the Suarez injury crisis at Barcelona, but he is certainly one for the future. An exciting talent with an unlimited ceiling.
