Erling Haaland burst onto the scene this season from out of nowhere. We all heard about the Norwegian U20 international that scored 9 GOALS in one game against Honduras in the FIFA U20 World Cup. One of those crazy stats and maybe a name you’d find on a pub quiz in 10 years time. But let’s be honest, most of you didn’t remember his name and didn’t think he would explode like he has done this season.
Erling Haaland – RB Salzburg’s gem
To say the Dortmund striker has been on fire in 2019/20 would be an understatement. Even the word prolific is underwhelming his ridiculous goal scoring record. After moving from Molde in 2018, very few average football fans knew about the talent of the 19 year old. But RB Salzburg did With the side, the Austrian league was a playground for Haaland. I mean when you’ve scored 3 HAT TRICKS in less than half a season, you’re too good. 16 goals and 4 assists in just 14 games for RB highlighted how he was levels above the standard of the league. But we have all seen players dominate one league and when it comes to one of Europe’s top leagues, they flop.
He really announced himself on the European stage, putting himself on the shop window for all the big clubs to see. A staggering 8 goals in just 6 appearances in the Champions League is unheard of. He’s only 2nd to the world class Robert Lewandowski with 10 goals, who himself has been an alien this year.
With 28 goals in all competitions before the turn of the year, there wasn’t one top side that wasn’t interested in Haaland. We did a piece on him HERE and titled it Europe’s hottest prospect for a reason. Manchester United, the Milan clubs, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Real Madrid, Liverpool. I could go on forever. With just a £17 million release clause, it was certain he was moving in January. The Red Devils reportedly met the clause, but refused to agree to putting a new £60 million release clause. Essentially making them a stepping stone for the Norway international.
New league, same Haaland
However Borussia Dortmund did and are now reaping the rewards. There was incredible anticipation building up to Erling Haaland’s debut for Die Borussen. Could he do it in one of Europe’s top leagues? Is he worth the hype? A lot of pressure on a still young man’s shoulders, would he crumble under it? Not a chance.
He made his debut off the bench in the 56th minute and scored a hat-trick in 23 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous. What makes it even better is the fact the German side were losing 3-1 before he came on. Veins of ice and as clinical as you could have hoped for. Beginner’s luck?
Nope! In his next game, he once again came off the bench and this time scored a brace against FC Koln. This isn’t FIFA, it’s one of Europe’s top 5 leagues. But Erling Haaland is scoring like he’s on amateur difficulty. 9 goals in all competitions for the black and yellow jersey ALREADY for this teenage sensation. It’s truly mind blowing how he hasn’t even needed time to adjust to a new team, new league, new city, country. Averaging 2.6 shots per game this season and you can put your money on at least one of them going in. Probably 2 or 3 based on what we’ve seen so far. Unsurprisingly, he’s won Bundesliga Player of the Month. Generational talent.
The future is bright
It’s genuinely terrifying how good he is at such a young age. At this rate, he’ll be on the move again in the summer. £60 million for a striker with his record and how highly he’s regarded across Europe makes him a bargain. It’s just a question of who can persuade him, the ball is well and truly in Norwegian’s court. Pace, power, technical ability, incredible movement and of course, deadly finishing. 2019/20 has been the season of Erling Haaland.
