Eddie Nketiah: Why Arsenal recalled their talented English striker

According to The Mirror, Mikel Arteta is unsure as to the next move for Eddie Nketiah, who has returned to Arsenal after his loan spell at Leeds was cut short. We look at where it went wrong, what he brings to a side and what’s next for the young England international.

At 20-years-old the Championship can be a pretty daunting experience, especially for the forwards. A ‘step below’ the Premier League but with ferocious crowds and a hot-tempered nature, the competitive nature of the league certainly exceeds England’s top division. That means there is a lot of pressure put on such young shoulders.

Eddie Nketiah in action for Leeds

Eddie Nketiah scored five goals in four starts for Leeds United. Of course the majority of his appearances came from the bench but he proved to be a reliable option from the bench. This would not be a problem if Marcelo Bielsa hadn’t promised a starting role. Arsenal see Nketiah’s ceiling as way higher than Leeds and that is why he’s been recalled. He showed calm and a deadly finishing touch; enough to tempt other Championship and potentially Premier League outfits into loaning him for the remainder of the season.

Eddie Nketiah – Style of Play

A classic fox in the box, Eddie Nketiah rarely intervenes in mainstream play, preferring to stay between the posts and wait for a chance to come in his general direction. In that respect he is similar to Paris St. Germain’s Mauro Icardi.

A natural finisher, Nketiah has the hearts of Arsenal fans after his League Cup performance against Norwich City last season and, should he be given another go for Arsenal, he could be a good back up for Lacazette and Aubameyang. The issue comes in the rise of the prolific Gabriel Martinelli. Two years younger and with greater talent, Nketiah will struggle to step ahead of the Brazilian. That means that another loan is almost certain.

What next?

A host of Championship clubs are interested in young Eddie Nketiah, including Bristol City. More experience at a senior level is needed. I don’t think time in the U21s will benefit him at this stage of his career. Another few months in the second tier could be useful.

As Arteta meets with him tomorrow, it will be interesting to see how Eddie Nketiah’s career at Arsenal Football Club pans out. One thing’s for certain, the future looks bright for both parties involved…
