Why Everton need David Moyes to replace Marco Silva

Everton have had a turbulent last 6 years. From being Top 4 challengers to now sitting in the relegation zone. The constant chopping and changing of managers has seen the side regress since David Moyes left Goodison Park. That era of stability, solidity and consistency under the Scot quickly collapsed. Now at their lowest point, would the return of their former manager be what they need?

The Toffees sit 18th in the Premier League table, 1 point below Southampton. Marco Silva has now lost his job on Merseyside, according to Sky Sports. Everton owner Farhad Moshiri, arrived at Finch Farm earlier today, for talks with the coach. This follows a 5-2 hammering by rivals Liverpool at Anfield yesterday. The scoreline was generous to the visitors, they were an absolute shambles.

Everton’s bad luck with managers and money

What’s disappointing about Everton is the fact they’re actively showing ambition. Whether that’s with their recruitment or their new £500 million stadium plans. Moshiri isn’t afraid to splash the cash, something the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham fans have been demanding from their owners. But despite spending hundreds of millions on transfers, they’ve managed to get worse.

The money hasn’t been spent wisely by Koeman, Allardyce or Silva. Signings like Cenk Tosun for £27 million price tag haven’t paid off. Even the £45 million on Gylfi Sigurdsson, hasn’t been a ‘hit’ as such. In fact, the Icelandic international epitomises the side. Flashes of brilliance and not enough. Now, do they need to appoint a familiar face in Moyes?

Since leaving Everton in 2012/13, neither the former Manchester United manager nor The Blues have progressed. He was sacked at the Red Devils humiliatingly after just 6 months. A one year stint with Real Sociedad followed where he also failed to impress. On his return to the Premier League, he relegated Sunderland to the Championship with his stock never being lower.

But he did manage to steer West Ham, who are now also struggling, to survival in 2017/18. Despite this, his contract was not renewed. Now, both the Irons and the Toffees are reportedly interested in his signature. How times change.

David Moyes – The man who laid the foundations

Moyes’ hard work and 11 years at Everton still don’t get enough credit to this day. To consistently achieve European football (Europa and Champions League) without spending ridiculous amounts of money, was very impressive. Though it didn’t work out, it’s a testament to the manager he was that Sir Alex Ferguson picked him as his successor.

I am joining the people’s football club.”

The former centre back was renowned for making solid defences and getting big results. Goodison Park was a fortress under Moyes, that can hardly be said now. Though he’s probably past his best days, reappointing David Moyes could bring that calmness and stability this Everton squad needs. He commands respect from everyone associated with the club and should be able to lift the spirits of the Toffees, to rescue a so far dire season.
