Ciro Immobile: Lazio and Italy striker on rampage in Serie A. Golden shoe?

Ciro Immobile burst onto the scene what seems like an age ago now. 6 years is a long time in football. A stellar 23 goal season with Torino made him one of Europe’s most sought after young strikers. However the €18 million move to Borussia Dortmund that followed failed to set Germany alight. 3 goals in 24 Bundesliga games was incredibly underwhelming and a loan to Sevilla in 2015/16 didn’t amount to much either. The Italian’s career was going backwards and whispers of one season wonder were starting to circle.

Then Immobile went back to his homeland with the hopes of rediscovering his old form. A loan back to Torino was an improvement with 5 goals and 2 assists in 14 games. Not exceptional, but a confidence booster nonetheless. Die Borussen though had enough and cut their losses, selling the attacker to Lazio for a mere €8.75 million. Now in 2020, that’s turned out to be an absolute steal.

The Serie A specialist

To say the 29 year old has been prolific would be a massive understatement. A staggering 26 goals in just 24 Serie A games means he’s comfortably the league’s top scorer. He’s SIX goals ahead of 2nd place Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s getting all the plaudits in the world for his form in 2019/20. Us included with that link above. Perhaps we need to start talking about the Italian international who cannot put a foot wrong at the moment.

Ciro Immobile in action for Lazio

More than a goal a game domestically, he’s 3 ahead of Lewandowski in the European Golden Shoe race. Oh and he also has 6 assists. Forget Germany and Spain, Italy is the Juventus youth product’s stomping ground.

It’s not like Immobile has suddenly come to life for Lazio either. He’s been outstanding for the side since he arrived in Rome 4 years ago. 93 goals in 129 appearances for the Aquilotti, Ciro scored an incredible 41 goals in all competitions in 2017/18. Serie A joint top scorer, Europa League top scorer and making the Team of the Seasons for both competitions. Still, most fans outside of Italy didn’t bat an eyelid at it. Now I’m glad he’s finally getting the credit he deserves universally.

Ciro Immobile – Style of Play

With 29 goals in 31 appearances (all competitions), Immobile is on course to break his tally from 2 seasons ago. He’s been instrumental in Lazio’s challenge to Inter and Juventus for the Scudetto so far. The Italian international has contributed to over 58% of the side’s goals in the Italian top flight this season (percentage includes assists). Ridiculous stats for the ‘one-season wonder’.

Averaging an astonishing 4 shots per game, his movement and positioning is exceptional. With the eye for a goal that he has, it’s no wonder Luis Alberto has 11 assists this season. Immobile is also a dominant physical presence at 6ft 1, making him an aerial threat coupled with his deadly finishing.

Alongside the pace and power up front, his ability on the ball other than just pulling the trigger is significant to this Lazio side. As aforementioned, he has 6 assists too, averaging an impressive 1.8 key passes per game. A figure out and out play makers would be proud of. It’s clear he does more than just put the ball in the back of the net. The striker is intelligent, technically sound but also industrious, working tirelessly for the team. Any manager in world football’s dream.

Ciro Immobile has been immense in 2019/20. If we’re raving about Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s also fair we start talking about how the Italian has been WORLD CLASS this season too. Perhaps if he was a bit younger, maybe a top European side would take a punt on him, even with his poor record outside of Italy. Either way, the Serie A specialist is on a rampage, so put some respect on his name.
