Cenk Tosun: Can Turkish striker redeem himself at Crystal Palace?

It’s fair to say Cenk Tosun hasn’t found his feet at Everton. Signed for £27 million in 2018 by Sam Allardyce, the Turkish international has struggled to find the back of the net for the Toffees. Just 9 Premier League goals across 2 and half seasons. A complete shadow of the player that was tearing up the league with Besiktas. Now, he’s been given a chance to prove himself, with Crystal Palace signing him on loan until the end of the season. Can the 28 year old remind us of why he was so highly rated?

As you can tell, Turkish Twitter exploded when the move to Selhurst Park was announced. I mean just look at the interactions on this tweet, incredible fans. Tosun was excellent in his homeland for the Black Eagles. 24 goals in all competitions in 2016/17 followed by an equally strong start in 2017/18 was what caught the interest of the blue of Merseyside.

Cenk Tosun has struggled at Everton

But it just hasn’t worked out. He’s struggled to get involved in most games and when he has had chances, he’s missed them. Confidence is low for the striker, without doubt. However, he’s rejected moves back to Turkey with Galatasary and Qatar. There’s clearly a hunger there and a willingness to prove himself in England.

We’ll give you a brief profile of Cenk Tosun and what we think he could bring to the Eagles:

Cenk Tosun – Style of Play

I’d describe the striker as a finisher, or a poacher. He isn’t the quickest and at 6ft, isn’t the tallest either. However, in Turkey, he was renowned as a goalscorer that was good with both feet and put the ball in the back of the net. Quite the opposite of what we’ve seen at Everton. But given the service with a couple of confidence boosting goals, he could shine at Palace.

Tosun has always had a high shots per game throughout his career. During his best season at Besiktas, he averaged 2.8. Even at Everton is his 5 appearances this season, 2.2 shots per game is decent. To take that many shots a game means when he does move, it’s often into good positions. Stats courtesy of WhoScored.

The Frankfurt youth product, as I mentioned before, is shot for confidence. But considering the amount of shots he takes a game, surely one is going to go in eventually? If given the service by the likes of Wilfried Zaha , I’m convinced he’ll do well. The video shows when he got it out of his feet, it was often goal bound.

Low risk, potentially high reward?

As soon as one goes in, there’s a good chance another will follow and so on. Worst come worst, it’s a loan for Palace and he can’t do ANY worse than Benteke.

Cenk Tosun signs for Crystal Palace on a 6 month loan deal

It’s low risk and, if he gets going, potentially high reward. Cenk Tosun has the chance to redeem himself, coming into the prime of his career. Whether he’ll do it or not, only time will tell…
