After 3 years of providing stability, hope and becoming a fan favourite of the Toon Army during a period of growing discontent with the ownership, Rafa Benitez will leave Newcastle United at the end of this month.
The Champions League winning manager arrived at St James Park in 2016 with the club in turmoil and on the brink of relegation. Though they did get relegated, he replaced Steve McClaren and gave the fans something to cheer about and the players something to play for, which ensured their stay in the Championship would not be long.
Benitez and his side immediately bounced back from the second tier of English football as champions and returned the Magpies to where they belonged. He could have walked after relegation with the clause in his contract, but chose to stay loyal to the Newcastle fans. This is what truly made the relationship between Rafa and the Toon flourish.
The Spaniard managed to secure Premier League status comfortably up until now with an average side with very little money to finance it. A remarkable achievement for the former Valencia, Liverpool and Real Madrid manager.
He is now expected to move to China after being offered a staggering £12 million per year to manage in the CSL. Let’s be honest, after what he’s been through with Mike Ashley, it’s the least he deserves…
