After a disappointing second season in Manchester and an overall underwhelming stint since his £75 million move to Old Trafford, Romelu Lukaku could be set for a move to Italy.
The Belgian striker, according to Sky Sports, is subject of strong interest from Inter Milan, with Antonio Conte a keen admirer of the forward since their spells at Chelsea and Everton respectively. Sky suggest the Nerazzurri are preparing a £9 million offer to take Lukaku on loan for 2 seasons before an obligation to buy for £54.8 million, taking the total to £62.8 million.
This rumour has legs to it too, with the Belgian international’s new agent Federico Pastorello confirming the interest in his client from Milan and the possibility of a move away from the Red Devils.
“Lukaku is a dream, a difficult one to make happen as such, but I believe nothing is impossible. It’s not impossible and Inter is trying hard.”Lukaku’s agent on reported interest from Inter
The striker arrived at Old Trafford for £75 million with high expectations to be the next great number 9 for the Red Devils. His first season with United was a great start with an impressive 27 goals in all competitions and he was recieved well by the Old Trafford faithful.
However, last season for the 26 year old was disappointing especially with the high standards he has set for himself over the years. 15 goals in all competitions was a significant fall from 2017/18. Lukaku was heavily criticised for his poor ball control and holdup play, his poor record against Top 6 sides as well as his weight gain from his Everton days.
Perhaps a move is necessary for both parties. United are undergoing a rebuild under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the emphasis on youth may prompt the Norweigen to give Rashford the nod ahead of Lukaku. Moreover, Conte will finally get the striker he has wanted for over 2 years, it seems like the perfect match with his system too.
