Arsenal have been shambolic this season. 13th in the table and 12 points away from the Top 4. Fans are genuinely worried they could be in a relegation battle, let alone battling for European football. Arsene Wenger’s departure hasn’t brought the change the Emirates faithful would’ve wanted. One of the legendary manager’s final contributions to the club was buying a world class striker in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But could he now leave North London?
Duncan Castles has reported that Real Madrid are working on a deal for the Gabonese forward. Castles claims that they would be willing to include €60 million summer signing Luka Jovic as part of the deal. High praise for the Arsenal striker, who has been outstanding since his move from Germany.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Elite
The former Borussia Dortmund attacker has been clinical in front of goal. 53 goals in 83 appearances across all competitions, he’s been one of club’s most prolific ever goalscorers. No wonder Los Blancos are rumoured to be in for him. What makes Aubameyang’s goal record even more impressive is what he’s having to work around. Since Mesut Ozil was frozen out by Unai Emery until recently, he’s been having to feed off scraps. A true testament to how good his movement and finishing is.
But beyond 2019/20, assuming Arsenal survive relegation (you’d like to think so), without EVEN Europa League football, there is no incentive for their top players to stay at the club. Lacazette, Aubameyang even record signing Nicolas Pepe could jump ship in the summer. What’s worrying for Arsenal fans is the the former Saint-Étienne winger is getting that call from the Spanish capital now.
Once in a life time opportunity
In my honest opinion, a striker of Aubameyang’s quality should leave in January. At 30 years old, he’s not getting any younger and is in the prime of his career. The man is scoring goals for fun without any decent service. Real have wanted him before and couldn’t get him. Now, the opportunity is here, he can’t afford to let it slip. When the world’s biggest club come calling, you just can’t say no. Especially considering the state of his current employers.
What’s even more baffling is the stick he gets off his OWN fans. The best player in the side and still not immune to ridiculous criticism. His friendship with AFTV, abuse in the streets of London. Yes it’s a minority. But, if you’re still getting criticised for the pettiest of things, why would you want to stay? It’s a testament to Auba’s professionalism that he still manages to keep a smile on his face and performs week in week out.
As for Arsenal, if they want to keep their star man, they need to show ambition. If Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves in January, the red of North London won’t even finish in the top 10. Calling that now.
