Alex Telles: Profile of attacking Brazilian Porto left-back

Alex Telles is in high demand, with Chelsea and Wolves reportedly looking to sign him. Let’s discuss his playing style, improvements he needs to make to his game and what makes the Brazilian so special.

The 27 year old Brazilian joined Porto from Galatasaray in 2016 for £6.5 million. Since then, he has developed to the point where he is valued on at £40 million. Telles’ contract with Porto ends in 2021 and he has received one cap from the national team.

Alex Telles – Style of Play

Telles is a very attacking left-back, known for his speed and play-making abilities. He is considered one of the brightest attacking fullbacks in Europe The Porto defender averages 1.2 shots per game and has 4 goals and 4 assists in 13 Primeira games this season. These figures are a testament to how dangerous he is going forward. Although Telles is a left-back, he can be deployed as a midfielder on the left side or even as a winger.

The Brazilian uses his brilliant left foot to deliver sublime crosses, with Porto regularly using his quality on set-pieces. The Porto left-back loves offering overlapping runs in the attack and with a low centre of gravity, he possesses the speed to beat defenders or fend off markers. Telles has averaged 2.4 key passes per game game in 23 games in all competitions this season.

Tackling is not a strength of the former Inter Milan loanee. He averages 1.4 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and just 0.1 blocks per game in 23 games this season.

Alex Telles in action for Porto

Though while analysing his numbers, it was very interesting that Telles’ numbers in the Europa League are twice as good as his league numbers. 2.2 tackles in Europe compared to 1.1 in the Portuguese league. Furthermore, the Brazilian committed just 0.8 fouls on average in 6 Europa League games compared to 1.7 fouls in 10 starts in the league.

Would Telles be a good signing?

In the 2019 summer, Telles was tipped to replace Filipe Luis at Atletico Madrid before they went with another Brazilian left-back in Renan Lodi. But he continues to be linked with Chelseas, who will go for the Brazilian if they can’t land Ben Chilwell.

A current market value of £40 million might be considered a bit high. But with the player entering the last 18 months of his contract, a lower fee should be able to be agreed. Especially considering Chelsea’s amazing negotiation team lead by Marina Granovskaia.

Marcos Alonso

In my opinion, Alex Telles isn’t who Chelsea should looking at. They should make a move for a more defensive left-back, considering they already have a forward thinking fullback in Marcos Alonso.
