Since moving to RB Leipzig from Premier League side Everton in the summer of 2019, first team opportunities been scarce for Ademola Lookman. With only 3 appearances in the Bundesliga in 2019/20, a return to the Premier League seems possible. According to the Daily Star, Newcastle United are interested. The Magpies have struggled for goals this season and are looking at options to try and sort out their troubles in attack. Could Lookman be the one? Here’s our profile on the former Everton player:
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Lookman started off his football career at local youth football side Waterloo. He then joined Championship side Charlton Athletic in 2014. Scoring prolifically for their youth sides, the winger was finally given his first team debut in November 2015. He would later score 12 goals in 49 appearances for the Addicks.
Moving to Premier League side Everton in January 2017, Lookman made his first team debut against Manchester City where he scored in a 4-0 victory for the Toffees. However, appearances were limited so he decided to move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig on loan where he impressed with 5 goals in 11 appearances during the second half of the 2017/18 season. He made 21 league appearances before moving to the side on a permanent deal in July 2019. Safe to say the move to Goodison didn’t go to plan for the Charlton youth product.
Ademola Lookman – Style of Play
Lookman is a quick, tricky winger that can easily beat his opponent, reflective in how many times he’s fouled. During that loan spell at Leipzig, Lookman was fouled 1.3 times per game (Whoscored.com) showing he is difficult to handle for defenders. However, a big deficiency in his game is his lack of end product. Something Newcastle are really crying out for.
The former Everton man has never reached up to ten goals in a season with the highest proportion of shots per game during a season being 1.2 shots per game at Leipzig. As a creator, he doesn’t fare much better. At Everton during the 2018/19 season, he only made 0.5 key passes per game, delivering just two assists. It doesn’t make good reading for Newcastle fans, who really need someone that can bring that end product they’re crying out for.
After playing just one start for Julian Nagelsmann this season, it looks like Lookman’s days at the Red Bull Arena are numbered. Just months after making the permanent switch. At 22, he is still developing his game and looks like he could get the minutes he needs at St James’ Park. But with that comes a lot of pressure. Newcastle have scored just 20 goals this season. If the former Everton winger is making this move, he’s going to have to hit the ground running. Can he do that? Based on his career so far, I’m not convinced. We’ll have to wait and see…
