Gedson Fernandes: What Portuguese prospect will bring to Spurs

Gedson Fernandes was a player in demand from Premier League clubs. Manchester United, West Ham and Chelsea all expressed their interest in the out of favour midfielder. But Tottenham have managed to the secure a deal for the Portuguese talent.

According to Sky Sports earlier this week, the Benfica midfielder was one of a number of targets for Manchester United. This list includes Donny van de Beek, who we did an article on HERE, if you’re interested. Both The Blues and the Hammers also made offers for Fernandes, but their London rivals have got a deal over the line. It’s an 18 month loan deal, with the option to buy for £43 million. A good deal that bears little to no risk for Spurs, with potentially high reward.

Gedson Fernandes in action for Benfica

The 21 year old is highly regarded in his homeland, coming through the fabled As Águias youth system. With the rise of Joao Felix in the last 2 seasons, it makes sense to sign a talented Portuguese prospect now, before their breakout season. Otherwise, the team will end up paying over £100 million for him.

So why is the midfielder so highly rated? We’ll give you a run down:

Gedson Fernandes – Style of Play

Fernandes is the definition of a box to box midfielder. He’s able to put in last ditch tackles, quickly transition play from defence to a counter attack before then beating the keeper with superb long range shots. If you couldn’t be bothered to watch the video, I just summed it up in a sentence. But more detail below:

The Portuguese international is excellent with the ball at this feet. The fast feet allow him to dribble past opposition players with ease. Though 0.9 dribbles per game in 2018/19 don’t show it, he’s a skilful dribbler able to transition from deep in his own half to the final third very quickly. His great turn of pace and how well he presses emphasise this too. This is the energy’s Mourinho’s side needs, who have often at times this season lacked that drive in the centre of the pitch.

More on the pressing, the 20 year old is an engine in midfield. How effectively he puts opposition midfielders under pressure is the intensity Premier League teams need. He’s not afraid to run at players either as shown in the video multiple times, using his strength to hold them off before skipping past them with his fast feet. Physically, he has the qualities to dominate midfields. With Fernandes in the team, I’m sure Spurs fans won’t miss Moussa Sissoko’s presence in midfield

But technically too, the Benfica youth product is promising. The shots from long range into the top corner are one thing. Multiple times in the video, he is shown to be a good crosser when drifiting out wide. But his through balls along the ground are promising too. Exactly what you want your striker to run on to. While Harry Kane is injured, Gedson could provide Heung Min Son with the service he needs. Whether the South Korean finishes it or not is a separate matter.

Worth a punt?

I can see why so many clubs wanted Gedson Fernandes. Yes everyone looks good on a YouTube highlight reel. But he is definitely promising and comes from a youth system with an excellent track record. If anything, he’s very similar to Pogba. In terms of build, technical ability and midfield presence, making him a powerhouse any Premier League side would want.

I think it’s worth a punt for Tottenham. Especially as it’s a loan deal with an option to buy. If Fernandes can realise his potential in North London, Jose Mourinho could have a top talent on his hands…

  1. he is not performing so well this season after injury so lets not expect to see a wonder kid — give him time and let him show what he brings to the party
