Alexander Nubel will be moving to Bayern Munich next season on a free transfer. The German side have been preparing for life without their number one Manuel Neuer. His role in their 2012/13 treble win as well as prolonged period of domestic dominance have earned him legendary status in Bavaria. Oh and not to mention his role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph. However, since sustaining a fracture injury in 2017, the 92 time capped German international has been on the decline. It’s therefore no surprise Nubel has been identified as Bayern’s successor to the 33 year old.
Much like Neuer, Nubel was born and raised in Gelsenkirchen. He started out his career in SC Paderborn before moving to Schalke in 2015. From an early age, the 23 year old has been compared to the World Cup winner, making his Bundesliga debut against Hoffenheim at the age of 19. He earned his first clean sheet against Eintracht Frankfurt in May 2018 and became a first team regular in the second half of 2018/19 under Domenico Tedesco. 4 clean sheets in 18 Bundesliga appearances were enough to displace Ralf Fahrmann.
This season under David Wagner, the German U21 international became Schalke’s number one and was appointed club captain. He has kept four clean sheets in fifteen league appearances as Die Knappen have improved from last season. They sit 5th only behind rivals Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. At the time of writing this of course.
Alexander Nubel – Style of Play
Often compared to Manuel Neuer, Nubel is a towering physical presence standing at 6ft 4 and has impressed despite having less than a hundred appearances in his career so far. His numbers are quite encouraging from the limited data we have.
In his 15 appearances for Schalke this season, he has made 48 saves with a save percentage of 71%, up from 62.3% last season (fbref.com). He has played an important role in the German side’s form this season, conceding just 21 goals. Only RB Leipzig and Borussia Monchengladbach have conceded less.
Deputy in waiting?
Nubel had announced that he will not be renewing his contract with Schalke which gave Bayern the opportunity to sign him up on a free transfer. However, Neuer shows no sign of giving up his starting spot just yet which makes Nubel’s role at the Allianz Arena up in the air. Would he be Bayern’s number two or would they send him out on loan? Only time will tell for the former Paderborn keeper.
