Leroy Sane: What lies ahead for Manchester City winger?

Leroy Sane is one of the most talented young players in world football. No question about it. At 23 years old, the sky is the limit for the German who’s elegance on the ball coupled with a killer instinct in front of goal makes him a joy to watch. After tearing his ACL in the first game of 2019/20, Sane is on the road to recovery. But prior to the injury, rumours over a move to Bayern Munich were heating up.

Situation with Bayern Munich

Talks were reportedly advancing between the German giants and the winger, with Bayern confident of landing their target. This injury however, has meant progress on the deal has halted. It’s a huge set back for the former Schalke attacker, who will now take time to get back to his best. Yet what does the future look like for Sane?

Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry would replace Ribery and Robben

According to multiple outlets, including the Mirror, Manchester City have been able to hold on to the German international until the end of the season, ruling out a January move. However, he is still expected to leave in the summer window, giving the club 2-3 months of Sane to help their Champions League campaign. A scenario that works for both parties.

Why Leroy Sane wants to move away

So why has this move come about? With Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery’s departures last summer, a successor is needed. Serge Gnabry has been excellent, but Kingsley Coman’s awful luck with injury has continued. That’s where Sane comes in. He would be expected to occupy that role for years to come, maintaining Bayern’s domestic dominance, whilst helping them challenge for Europe. An attractive prospect, especially as it gives him a chance to return to his homeland.

Leroy Sane with the Premier League trophy

Yet as good as the German champions are, surely staying at the Etihad makes more sense? World class players all around him, ambitious owners, a potentially more flexible wage structure, one of the best managers of all time. But it’s to do with play time and his relationship with Guardiola.

Tough love and friction

This article by MEN explains how the Spaniard treats Sane differently to Bernardo Silva. Or at least refers to them differently. Guardiola is far more reserved with praise for Sane and indirectly critical when saying it ‘depends on him’, as that questions the German’s mentality. Perhaps this is just his way of man-management. But it clearly isn’t working if Sane wants to leave. Also as good as Silva has been, the Schalke youth product has outperformed him in the last two seasons statistically. Tough love can sometimes be a bit too tough it seems.

Leroy Sane with Pep Guardiola

The friction between Guardiola and Sane hasn’t got better. The City boss was reportedly angry the winger chose to go with the German FA’s surgeon rather than Pep’s trusted doctor for his recovery. Perhaps this is just me, but I’ve seen the former Bayern coach barking instructions at the 23 year old more than anyone else on the pitch. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems like Sane more than anyone doesn’t listen or follow Guardiola’s advice. Again, this might just be Pep’s style of man management.

Either way, Leroy Sane is an incredible player. Hopefully he gets back to full fitness soon and continue his rise to becoming one of Europe’s best wingers. Whether that will be in Munich or Manchester remains to be seen.
