Mason Greenwood: The Manchester United generational talent

Manchester United are historically renowned for the development and success of their youth academy. You can go all the way back to the likes of Sir Bobby Charlton and Duncan Edwards. Or perhaps in slightly more recent memory, the Class of 92. Now, the hopes are on Marcus Rashford to become the ‘local lad’ that shines in the first team. But does Mason Greenwood have an even higher ceiling than his England compatriot?

The 18 year old has burst onto the scene in 2019/20, in a so far tumultuous season for the club. 6 goals in all competitions makes him their second top scorer. A few cameo appearances last year made showed glimpses to the Red Devils faithful what he is capable of.

“People says he’s like the new Robin van Persie but I don’t know. I think he’s his own man. I’ve not seen another player like him.

In a side that has struggled for goals until recently, Greenwood has taken his chances and come up with crucial goals for the side. 4 goals in 5 Europa League games highlights the pedigree the England U21 international has. But it’s not just how many goals he’s scoring. It’s the nature of how he’s scoring them.

Mason Greenwood – Style of Play

What seems special about Mason Greenwood is the confidence and natural ability he has. Time and time again, he’s shown he’s not afraid to take on his man. The way in which he shifts his body, turns and takes just one touch to take the defender out of the game is mesmerising. It’s like he’s always one step ahead of the game. Multiple times in the video, his awareness shines through when he has his back to a defender and turns them with ease.

Averaging 2.8 shots per game in the Europa League this season, Greenwood has no fear of testing the keeper. Left foot or right foot, he’s comfortable on either side. I mean the man takes penalties and free-kicks with his right foot for goodness sake! The definition of two footed.

The new RVP?

The striker has been likened to Robin Van Persie with his instinctive and natural goal scoring ability. Quite the compliment at 18 years of age. He just seems to have that eye for goal that the Dutchman had, alongside the gift of blistering pace. That second goal against AZ Alkmaar highlighted this. Instinctive, precise and clinical.

I think Greenwood has more natural ability and talent than Marcus Rashford. You just sometimes get that feeling with a player and know when they line themselves up for a shot, they’re gonna score. I get that with the United youth product. He’s a serious hot prospect for club and country.
