Ansu Fati: The next Barcelona superstar from La Masia

Ansu Fati. A name that has sprung out of absolutely nowhere this season. Well, most of the footballing world didn’t know about him. However, the La Masia did and he’s now one of their most exciting prospects for years. Barcelona’s youth setup, the gift that keeps on giving.

The 17 year old (yes 17), shone on the European stage today for the Blaugrana. His 86th minute winner was enough to get the Catalan club a victory away at the San Siro and knock Antonio Conte’s Inter side into the Europa League. That goal made him the youngest EVER goal scorer in the history of the Champions League. An incredible achievement that has inevitably put him in the spotlight. Not that he wasn’t already:

Ansu Fati

Fati became Barcelona’s 2nd youngest player to debut for the club earlier this year, on the 25th August. Fast forward 6 days, he became their youngest ever scorer against Osasuna. This was all without playing a game for the reserve side. A special talent without doubt. Oh and he also holds the record for the youngest player to represent the Blaugrana in the Champions League. Truly ridiculous. He’s younger than me for goodness sake!

The former Sevilla youth academy player has had a good season thus far. 2 goals and an assist in 9 La Liga games is quite impressive, considering his age. Even more so when you consider he’s come off the bench for most of his appearances. 1.4 shots and 1.2 dribbles per game too (WhoScored) is also not bad at all. Fati has also made 2 appearances for the Spanish Under 21 side. Considering his meteoric rise, La Furia Roja would be wise to persuade him to commit to the national team as soon as possible.

Ansu Fati – Style of Play

This video is mesmerising. The pace, dribbling and skill of Ansu Fati is such a joy to watch. The way he drops his shoulder and feints, it’s Leo Messi-esque. Of course many young talented wingers have these traits.

However, the La Masia graduate looks special. His positioning always seems to be on point, the runs he makes are intelligent and it’s like he’s got eyes in the back of his head. The epitome of a Barcelona footballer. Perhaps I’m exaggerating, but based on the video and what I’ve seen of him, Fati looks incredible. For a 17 year old too, he can hold the ball up surprisingly well.

What a player the Spanish giants have, I’m excited to see how he develops.
