Is Vitor Pereira the right man for Everton?

According to Sky Sports, Everton are set to land Vitor Pereira as their new manager. But who is the former Porto manager?

Vitor Pereira – History

With a short playing career lasting until he was just 28-years-old, Pereira took his first job in the lower leagues of Portugal. It wasn’t until 2011 when he had his first taste of success. Working as an assistant manager at Porto under Andre Villas-Boas, Pereira was launched into the spotlight when Chelsea paid Boas’ release clause. What was initially seen as temporary, Pereira won back to back Primeira Liga’s. Not a bad start.

In 2013, Everton actually offered Pereira an interview for their vacant managerial post, but he instead opted for the Saudi League. What followed were a few years of money-chasing, rather than title-hunting seasons. Finally, where he is now: at Shanghai SIPG. Will Vitor Pereira finally change his philosophy and take a challenge?

Vitor Pereira has taken a few odd decisions in his time as a manager.

Tactics

At 51 years of age, Pereira is an attacking minded coach. This is something that Everton should make an imperative when looking for a manager. Their plethora of attacking talent, spearheaded by Richarlison, would make most managers lick their lips. It’s about getting the best out of their talented squad.

Although usually preferring a 4-3-3 shape, Pereira’s pragmatic approach to football management can often see him deploy more adventurous formations. He has specifically taken a liking to the 3-4-1-2 and 3-4-3 alterations whilst in Shanghai. A manager not afraid to take a risk can always be seen positively. With Pereira a big fan of operating with a number ten, fluid football can be expected at Goodison Park.

With his signing imminent, can the Portuguese Vitor Pereira make an impact worthy enough of taking Everton back up the Premier League table? Only time will tell…
