We never thought we’d see Jose Mourinho and Spurs in the same sentence. As bizarre as it is, it’s reality. Mourinho has replaced Pochettino and a new era has begun in North London. With this, we’re expecting January signings. Perhaps not as expensive as the former Manchester United manager is used to, but definitely some firepower to reignite a deflated side. One man who could kick start this rebuild is Ruben Dias.
The Benfica defender has risen to prominence in his native Portugal. For club and country, his stock has been rising over the last two seasons. His role in Portugal’s Nations League and As Águias’ league title triumphs have caught the attention of the Premier League’s best clubs. Manchester City and Wolves have been linked with Dias recently.
However, Mourinho’s sensational return to the spotlight has made Spurs a strong possible destination. According to The Independent, the 22-year-old could be an ideal replacement for Toby Alderweireld. With top defenders hard to come by, the price Benfica would be looking for is rumoured to be around £59 million.
Ruben Dias – Style of Play
At 6ft 1in, Dias is the DEFINITION of a ball playing centre back. People rave that Trent Alexander-Arnold could play in midfield with his extraordinary technique. I reckon the Portuguese international could as well. That’s how good he is on the ball.
At least half a dozen times in the video, he plays an inch-perfect ball, either over the top or through a gap, to the striker, leading to a clear chance through on the goal. Truly sensational from a centre half. Dias has averaged an astonishing 5.9 long balls per game in the Portuguese league in 2019/20. 89.2% pass accuracy too. Says it all really, he’s like a midfielder in central defence.
Following on from that, the Benfica youth product is comfortable walking out of defence and even dribbling into midfield. But his ability on the ball isn’t detrimental to his defending. Dias is rarely out of position, despite what you would think with him dribbling out from defence. Several times in the video, he slides in successfully and doesn’t shy away from a challenge. The sort of aggression a Mourinho team craves for.
Of course, his physicality and height make him an aerial threat from set-pieces. Moreover, he’s not the slowest centre half either, making up ground quite well in the video on numerous occasions.
Altogether, Ruben Dias looks like a top defender with potential, but could also fit straight into Spurs’ first team. £59 million isn’t exactly cheap. But if the Portuguese international keeps putting in great performances, that figure is only going to rise.
