Danny Rose: Defender’s difficult time at Tottenham coming to an end.

Danny Rose was comfortably Spurs, England’s and perhaps the league’s best left back 2-3 years ago. Things couldn’t be going better for the Englishman, who had worked hard to cement his place in Tottenham’s first team. However, the last 2 years have been tumultuous on and off the pitch for him. Now, he looks set to end his time with the North London side.

Reports from Sky Sports show the England international has come out saying he’ll run down his contract with the club. According to Rose, Daniel Levy has not offered him a new contract and were trying to move him on in the summer. Yet the left back has come out saying he won’t be moving until it ends. This is coming at a time where the future of manager Mauricio Pochettino is also unclear.

Rose has endured a tough time which has seen him fall down the pecking order for club and country. It’s quite sad how the media don’t give him the credit and sympathy he deserves for a tough time. Footballers aren’t robots and more light needs to be given to the issues the 29 year old has addressed:

Mental health and racism

The Tottenham defender struggled with depression in 2018. In such a competitive and sometimes brutal sport, to come out honestly about mental health is admirable. The programme where he spoke about his struggles with it alongside the rest of the panel (above) was a breath of fresh air. Raising awareness about these issues is crucial in combating them.

But alongside these personal struggles, the racist abuse directed at Rose and the England team was horrendous. It got to the former Leeds fullback. No amount of money earned per week is an excuse to abuse someone over their skin colour. It hurt him to the point where he is ‘looking forward to ending his football career’. So sad to hear.

“At the minute, how I’ve programmed myself now, I just think that I’ve got five or six more years left in football and I just can’t wait to see the back of it, seeing how things are done in the game at the minute.”

New chapter?

So Danny Rose will leave Tottenham. There will definitely be suitors for the left back, who still has something to offer. A move to another Premier League club, or potentially another one of Europe’s top 5 leagues could be next for him. We wish him well.
