Why Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez bust up is an issue

According to the BBC, Raheem Sterling has been sent home from the England camp ahead of their 2020 qualifier against Montenegro following a bust up with Joe Gomez. This comes after their altercation in Sunday’s fixture between Liverpool and Manchester City. Should he have been sent home?

There’s a history of players hating each other at club level. Of course there is. But when they link up for international duty, can they get along? Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Robin Van Persie couldn’t. On the hand, Sergio Ramos and Gerard Piqué certainly could, winning the World Cup and the EURO’s as Spain’s defensive pairing. How will we see the Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez situation develop?

It’s a tricky one really. With both Liverpool and Manchester City at the pinnacle of the Premier League, there’s no doubt that there will be many more heated clashes to come. The exchange of insults. The push. It was surprising to see that Sterling could not keep his cool a whole day after the incident; the amount of aggravation he receives on a daily basis, yet a ten second exchange on a football pitch has crumbled him.

Raheem Sterling at fault?

Gareth Southgate’s side, especially at the World Cup, was all about synergy and togetherness. As Sterling is England’s ‘poster boy’ and Gomez is sure to be a pivotal defender, can Gareth get them to work together? It’s early days for sure but the signs really aren’t great. If it got to the point that Sterling had to be sent home, there is true distaste between the pairing. The EURO’s are just around the corner…

I really hope that they can get it together but this is sure to cause a fracture in the dressing room and tensions will be high. Was the situation truly handled well? Is it good that this can be seen as a Gomez ‘win’? Is this to be a Huntelaar-Van Persie situation or a Ramos-Piqué. We can all hope it’s the latter.
