Ajax’s exciting side was every neutral fan’s team of choice last season. A young team killing giants with sheer dominance was a breath of fresh air in 2018/19. Dynamic manager, imperious defence, industrious midfield and a scintillating attack. But as always, the man between the posts goes under the radar. Andre Onana perhaps didn’t get the credit he deserved:
The Cameroonian was solid for the Dutch side last season, conceding just 46 goals in 60 games. Despite not getting the same plaudits as the likes of De Ligt and De Jong last season, the La Masia graduate doesn’t look to be short of suitors for the upcoming January or summer window.
According to the Daily Mail and De Telegraaf, Tottenham and PSG respectively are interested in Onana. Figures in the region of £35 million are being quoted by news outlets, which seems very reasonable for a keeper of his calibre. Here’s what he’d bring to the next side he joins:
Andre Onana – Style of Play
As you’d expect from someone from both of Johan Cruyff’s institutions, the 23 year old is very comfortable on the ball. Though the video doesn’t show it , his distribution and presence is excellent. Not afraid to go off his line and be proactive, he define’s the modern day keeper. A video HERE shows the best of his ‘sweeper keeper’ antics.
In terms of the saves, the former Samuel Eto’o Academy member doesn’t fall short. The video above shows the best of the shot stopper, making match winning saves. It’s hard to analyse keepers unlike outfield players. But Onana, based on my limited knowledge of keeping, seems like a very solid option on the market.
For £35 million, the Cameroon international would be a valuable edition to any side in Europe’s top sides. Let’s hope he gets that move…
