Lionel Messi’s Top 10 free kicks for Barcelona and Argentina

Yesterday, a little known Argentinian scored the 50th free kick of his career. 50. The Messiah is an alien and we’re truly blessed to watch him week in week out. We thought a fitting tribute would be to give you our Top 10 Lionel Messi free kicks for Barcelona and Argentina.

We’ve picked these free kicks solely on how good they look. The margins are fine when you’ve scored 50 career free kicks, most of which are stunning. If you think we’ve missed something, be sure to let us know in the comments.

Here’s a link to our other article on the GOAT, his astronomical 2011/12 season.

We made our list mostly from this video by Messi Magic, so if you fancy sitting back and watching 15 minutes of pure brilliance check out the video HERE.

But below we pick out our favourites in no particular order:

Lionel Messi vs Dynamo Kyiv 2009

With the two sides tied at 1-1 in Ukraine, Leo Messi steps up to lift a wonderful free kick over the wall that goes in off the crossbar. 2-1 to the Barcelona, no chance for the keeper.

Deportivo 2011

Barcelona are leading 1-0 away from home at Deportivo courtesy. Up steps the Argentinian international to the free kick. He unleashes a stunning curling strike that bends around the wall nestling into the top corner. Goalkeeper rooted to the spot. Understandably so.

Atletico Madrid 2012

Xavi and Messi are standing over a free kick at an angle that suits the right footer. But the 5 time Balon D’Or winner chose to score an incredible set piece. A curling strike that flies through the air before hitting the side netting of the far post. Truly genius from THE genius.

Real Madrid 2012

El Classico, a game watched by millions across the world concurrently. Real Madrid were leading 2-0 at home before Messi was given a free kick a bit further from than goal than he is used to. But that didn’t stop him from a bending a beauty around the Los Blancos wall into the bottom corner past Iker Casillas. The man for the big occasion, no doubt.

Lionel Messi vs Nigeria 2014

2014 World Cup in Brazil. No bigger stage for a professional footballer to perform on. Carrying the hopes and dreams of Argentina on his back, the Albiceleste’s all time top scorer placed a sumptuous free kick into the far corner of the goal to give his country a 2-1 lead on the stroke of half time. Ice cool under pressure.

Sevilla 2015

Perhaps the most textbook Messi free kick. 20 yards from goal, left foot curling strike into the top left corner, no chance for the keeper. Average by the standards of this alien.

USA 2016

Semi-Finals of the Copa America, yet another huge occasion on the international stage. LM10 over the ball, you know the end result. An incredible whipping effort that sails over the wall and the keeper into to the top right corner. Truly breathtaking.

Villarreal 2017

Postage stamp, top bins, upper echelon. Whatever phrase you have to describe top corner, this fits the description. The Catalan club are 1-0 down to Villarreal in the 90th minute before their greatest ever player ruins the party for the home fans. A curling strike that wrong foots the keeper and is perhaps as top corner you can get. Running out of words at this point.

Espanyol 2019

Scoring a normal penalty is hard enough as it is. Scoring a PANENKA penalty seems impossible. Not for Leo Messi. A nonchalant chip goes over the wall before beating the keeper and defender on the goal line. Ridiculous even by the master’s standards.

Lionel Messi vs Liverpool 2019

And finally we end on perhaps a sad note for the Blaugrana front man. We all know the historic night at Anfield where Liverpool humiliated Barcelona in a miraculous comeback from 3-0 down. But let’s appreciate the man who dragged his team to what seemed like a comfortable position in the first leg. A curling strike that beats the best goalkeeper in the world with ease. Stunning as always from Lionel Messi.
