After Aurelio De Laurentiis exclaimed that “if some of the European top clubs were to offer €180m we can start talking about selling him (Fabián)” in a recent interview, it is clear the Napoli hierarchy could become susceptible to any pressure from Europe’s big boys. With Real Madrid joining the race for the Spanish midfielder, Fabian has some of Europe’s biggest clubs scrambling over him – we assess each option available to Mr Ruiz Pena.
City just love to stockpile quality playmakers, dont they? With David Silva coming to the end of his lifecycle, it is clear City need another Silva-esque player to fill that hole. No one is suited better than Fabian Ruiz. Born out of the typical Spaniard prototype, he would provide City with Silva’s influence – and more. Having such a physical presence with a creative skillset offers City a wildcard to pull on Liverpool, Spurs and all the rest of the Premier League next season.
Ruiz will consider playing time as one of the key determinants for a move. As he seems to be coming into his own at the moment, he wouldn’t want to see himself being shunned to the bench. With City’s wealth of talent, Phil Foden breaking through, and David Silva still at the peak of his powers, it will be hard for City to promise Ruiz the game time he may demand.
Barcelona and world-class playmakers – it’s a match made in heaven. The playmaker already has experience in Spain, with his time at Real Betis and Elche. The fact that the 23-year-old admitted he fell in love with football due to Barca legend Xavi seems to point towards the fact that it is just fate for Fabian to end up at the Catalonian club.
With Ivan Rakitić seemingly on his way out from the club, there is space for another midfielder. Ever since the formidable trio of Xavi-Iniesta-Busquets got broken up, the Spanish champions have lacked continuity within their midfield. Frenkie De Jong and Arthur have been the shining lights for the Blaugranas, and they could pursue Fabian in order to create another formidable trio.
Last, and certainly not least, is Zidane’s Los Blancos. The Frenchman has a big task ahead of him. The creation of a new era, after the large overhaul of the squad in the previous transfer window is proving tricky. There is still many problems facing Zinedine, and the aging midfield is one of them. The aging pair of Kross and Modric have come under heavy scrutiny in recent months, Casemiro will never be truly appreciated due to the lack of Galactico aura about him and Isco is deemed surplus to requirements.
This isn’t a problem that just cropped up for Real. Zidane tried to address it in the summer, by targeting Christian Eriksen, but the move never materialised. If Fabián Ruiz opted for Madrid, he could be one of the pillars in which Zidane builds his second reign upon – the true Spanish Galactico. One can question if Madrid is the right place for Fabian’s development. The turmoil and negative energy in the Bernabeu at the moment can sometimes prove to be too much.
