They arrived on the red side of Manchester with the highest of expectations. The elite players that could walk into any Premier League side. But alongside this came the highest of price tags. £75 million for Romelu Lukaku, £450,000 per week for Alexis Sanchez. Fast forward 2-3 years, both players have left Old Trafford for the San Siro. To say the moves haven’t gone to plan for the players or the club is an understatement.
Despite criticism early on in the window for a lack of ruthlessness, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now fulfilled his promise of moving out players not in his plans. Smalling to Roma, Darmian to Parma and of course the two in the title to Inter. The former Everton and Arsenal stars have a chance of redemption in Italy now and we’re backing them to succeed.
The Belgian powerhouse has already hit the ground running for Antonio Conte’s side. Getting off the mark with a goal in his first game for the Nerazzurri sets a good precedent for the still just 26 year old striker. He was criticized for his weight, first touch and going missing in big games during his time at United.
But many are expecting him to flourish in Serie A, where he can really kick on an already impressive career. What’s frightening is he hasn’t even reached his prime yet…
As for the Chilean winger, his sharp decline at the Red Devils from his days with the Gunners iss upsetting for neutrals. On his day, the best winger in the league that puts in 110% and turns up to win games singlehandedly. But now he’s known for playing the piano, losing the ball constantly and ‘stealing a living’.
Yet for Chile, it seems like the Sanchez of old is back. Another impressive Copa America suggests that he has something left to give and in Inter’s colours, perhaps he can reinvigorate himself.
It’s no coincidence both perform exceptionally on international duty but disappoint in Manchester. Conte got the best out of Victor Moses at Chelsea when no one saw him as a first choice right back. He did the same at Juventus. With the talent he has at his disposal,, we’re tipping Sanchez and Lukaku to thrive at Inter.
