After Rafa Benitez’s departure from St James’ Park, it is no surprise some of his most improved players in his Newcastle side are leaving too.
Leicester City have announced the signing of Ayoze Perez from the Magpies for a £30 million fee. He passed his medical earlier today and will join the Foxes immediately after 5 years with Newcastle.
The Spaniard had a very decent season in 2018/19 under the stewardship of Benitez, scoring 12 goals in the Premier League, his best return to date. Now 25 and having been a English top flight striker for so long, Leicester have decided to take a punt on him, making him one of their record transfers.
There are questions over whether Perez will succeed in a system other than that of Rafa’s. Granted he’s come off the back of a good season for Newcastle and had been improving every season since then.
However, it is worth bearing in mind that the former Liverpool manager managed to get something out of Yoan Gouffran, so was the former Tenerife striker performing above what he should’ve been?
