After five superb seasons at Liverpool, Phillippe Coutinho got his dream move to the Nou Camp for a staggering £142 million (if clauses are met). Just one year with the Blaugrana, the Brazilian could be on the move again. According to The Express, Chelsea have reportedly stepped up in the race for the talented midfielder.
The midfielder has not quite lived up to expectations when called upon for Ernesto Valverde’s side, with just 7 goal contributions in 34 La Liga games last season (albeit 12 were from the bench). He has struggled to establish himself in Valverde’s starting eleven, especially as he faces fierce competition from Ousmane Dembélé and Malcom. Reports suggest that Chelsea are one of a number of clubs interested in Coutinho, but it’s difficult to see the fee being under £100 million.
The ‘little magician’ spent his youth career in his native Brazil with Vasco de Grama, where he convinced Inter Milan to spend €4 million. After returning from 2 years on loan at Vasco, he was a bit part player at the San Siro, prompting him to spend a season on loan at Espanol under Mauricio Pochettino. He began to impress in Spain, convincing Liverpool to spend just £8.5 million on him and what a bargain that turned out to be…
Likelihood of move
If Chelsea are able to avoid their transfer ban, you could see this becoming a very likely move. It seems, however, that The Blues will wait to see who their permanent manager is before launching a £100m+ bid. Nevertheless, a tricky number ten could be exactly who they need after losing Eden Hazard to Madrid just a few days ago.
Chelsea fans, if you aren’t banned from making transfers, would you want to see Coutinho in blue?
