Why is Rabbi Matondo leaving Manchester City for Schalke?

The incredible success of starlet Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund has inspired many young players to consider leaving the comfort of the UK’s top academies to play week in week out in the Bundesliga.

Sancho forced a move away from Manchester City to Signal Iduna Park, with many raising eyebrows over the switch at the time. Yet months have gone by and the Englishman is thriving for Die Borussen with 15 goal contributions in 19 Bundesliga games. He’s just 18 years of age too. Truly astonishing.

His gutsy move could potentially revolutionise young player development with various success stories in the German top flight. Here are two examples below:

Reiss Nelson (on loan at Hoffenheim from Arsenal): 6 goals in 13 games

Ademola Lookman (on loan at RB Leipzig in 2017/18 from Everton): 8 goal contributions in 11 games

Even Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi, another 18 year old wonder kid, has handed in a transfer request and is subject to bids in excess of £30 million from Bayern Munich.

But who is the latest edition to this list of young players currently warming the bench for top Premier League clubs? It’s Manchester City’s Rabbi Matondo.

The 18 year old has been at the Citizens’ academy since his move from Cardiff in 2016, but has not made a first team appearance under Pep Guardiola.

“I know how good he is. He’s a winger, so fast, incredibly quick and a young talent. That is another thing; how good this club is working.”

Guardiola on the young Welshman

The Welshman has been given his first international cap by manager Ryan Giggs, and his lack of playing time at the Etihad has alerted FC Schalke, who are renowned for having a plethora of young footballing talentThe German side, according to Sky Sports, have agreed an £11 million deal with City for Matondo, having had an bid rejected earlier this week.

He will join an abundance of other young players plying their trade in Germany, which is without doubt one of Europe’s best leagues for player development.
