Malcom vs Willian: Who would Chelsea prefer?

Hot off the press ladies and gents. The Barcelona-Willian saga initially took off in the summer but now seems to be entering its pinnacle.

At first, The Blues rejected £50 million, but rumours have begun circling that they’d be open to a swap deal involving Barca winger and Brazilian compatriot Malcom. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to identify who we think is the better fit for Chelsea under Sarri…

Common with Brazilians, Malcom is a skilful dribbler, capable of playing in central attacking midfield alongside his preferred position on the wing. He is a competent shooter from distance yet also a quality crosser of the ball.

Alongside his blistering pace and technical ability, Malcom is hard to push off the ball, demonstrating fantastic hold up play for a 5ft 7in winger. Not to mention, he is a set piece specialist shown by his strikes against Nancy and St Etienne in his season at Bordeaux.

Malcom has failed to set La Liga alight this season, making just seven appearances for La Blaugrana. Hampered by injury and clearly frustrated with his lack of chances under Ernesto Valverde.

At only 21, he has shown he has the quality to play at the peak of world football. A reminder…

2017/18 Stats (Bordeaux)

Appearances – 35

Goals – 12

Assists – 7

Key Passes (per game) – 2.5

Dribbles (per game) – 2.7

Willian has gone on to make over 200 appearances for Chelsea and contributing to important goals when he comes off the bench. He is viewed as a hardworking and agile midfielder, capable of playing on the wing or as a central attacking midfielder. He is also a free kick specialist as shown in the 2015/16 season that possesses creativity alongside a goal-scoring threat.

2018/19 Stats (Chelsea)

Appearances – 18

Goals – 2

Assists – 3

Key Passes (per game) – 2.5

Dribbles (per game) – 1.6

A move to Barcelona would be beneficial for Willian. At 30, opportunities in his career to move to bigger clubs will diminish and this may be his final chance to move to a club challenging for the Champions League. His stamina and agility will suit the play style of the Catalan Club, making it easier to adapt to Ernesto Valverde’s system.

However, first-team football won’t come easy for the former Donetsk winger due to the abundance of midfield talent that Valverde has at his disposal, similar to Malcom’s current issues.
