Taste of Football’s: Top 10 Footballers of 2018

It’s that time of the year again. Football enthusiasts all over gather in an attempt to compile a list of their best footballers of the year, creating endless debates and most likely missing someone out. But without further ado, here is our best attempt at the Top 10 Footballers of 2018… (stats don’t include internationals – from transfermarkt.co.uk)

10. Neymar

One half of the deadly Neymar-Mbappé duo that terrorises both Ligue 1 and Champions League defenders. However, without a serious trophy (no offence Ligue 1), Neymar has found himself down at number 10 on my list. Still, he has had another good year following his arrival in Paris. 25+ goals is some feat, no matter what league it’s in.

9. Harry Kane

World Cup Golden Boot winner and captain of semi-finalists England, Harry Kane proved once again that he wasn’t a ‘one season wonder’. A stellar 30 goal campaign in the Premier League in 2017/18 was second to a certain Egyptian on this list and now no one can deny the Englishman is world class. His goal-pinching antics mean little when you bang them in as frequently as this man – although he should’ve squared it to Sterling…

STATS

GAMES PLAYED – 50

GOALS SCORED – 34

ASSISTS – 6

8. Kevin De Bruyne

Oh, Kevin. The figurehead of a mesmerising, Guardiola-led Manchester City side, picking up the Premier League title with over 100 points. Injury may have stifled him in the latter part of 2018 but 16 assists in the Premier League the season before as well as some absolute belters have him sat in a healthy eighth place. It’s between him and Eden Hazard for the best player in the league.

STATS

GAMES PLAYED – 29

GOALS SCORED – 4

ASSISTS – 9

7. Raphaël Varane

Champions League. World Cup. The man won it all this year. A colossus at the back for Los Blancos. His crucial header against Uruguay in the Quarter-Finals capped off an incredible World Cup and a special 2018 for the Frenchman. Crazy to think he is still just 25 years of age.

6. Antoine Griezmann

Man of the Match against Croatia in the World Cup Final was one of many good performances from the Atlético Madrid sharpshooter. A good domestic and continental campaign, including the UEFA Europa League has earned him sixth in my Top 10.

STATS

GAMES PLAYED – 52

GOALS SCORED – 33

ASSISTS – 18

5. Mohamed Salah

Undeserved winner of the Puskás Award but a fantastic year nonetheless for the Egyptian. Premier League top scorer with 32 goals and often unplayable in a devastating Liverpool attack that ravaged all in its path, including that unforgettable night at Anfield where they dismantled Premier League Champions Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League tie. Oh and he’s not a one season wonder either with 13 goals in the league already.

STATS

GAMES PLAYED –  49

GOALS SCORED – 37

ASSISTS – 18

4. Kylian Mbappé

What a revelation this young man has been. Few would have thought he would be the driving force in a World Cup-winning French side. Still only 20 and off the back of a great 2017/18 season and a World Cup Final goal, the coming year is Kylian Mbappé’s oyster. Have we finally found the answer to life after Messi and Ronaldo? He takes a well deserved 5th place on this list.

STATS

GAMES PLAYED – 38

GOALS SCORED – 25

ASSISTS – 13

3. Cristiano Ronaldo

49 goals in all competitions this year and another UEFA Champions League title to boot made 2018 just another day in the office for CR7. He soon joined Italian champions Juventus where he already has 14 goals from 19 games for the Bianconeri. The legendary player continues to go from strength to strength, even at the age of 33.

STATS

GAMES PLAYED – 46

GOALS SCORED – 43

ASSISTS – 14

2. Luka Modrić

Luka Modrić was always going to be high on my list. A good year for Real Madrid but more importantly a fantastic World Cup where he led Croatia all the way to the World Cup final. He ended the sheer dominance of the Messiah and CR7 by becoming the first human to win the Ballon d’Or in 11 years. A slight dip in form recently but an outstanding footballing year nonetheless.

STATS

GAMES PLAYED – 42

GOALS SCORED – 1

ASSISTS – 9

1. Lionel Messi

Fifth in the Ballon d’Or must be a joke. 77 GOAL CONTRIBUTIONS (51 goals, 26 assists) in 2018 is way ahead of the pack. You could argue it hasn’t been up to standards with the other superhuman seasons we have seen from the little Argentinian (like 2011/12) but unmatchable stats and another La Liga title seems to have just been overlooked. Imagine Olivier Giroud having the year Messi has had. Everyone and their dog would be calling for him to win it, never mind come fifth. Number one for me.

STATS

GAMES PLAYED – 48

GOALS SCORED – 47

ASSISTS – 23
