Pedro: Anomaly

Deep in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, young Brazilian talent flourish with their astonishingly deft touches and ability to conjure something magical with just the flick of a boot. This style of football has facilitated the greats of the Brazilian game, including Garrincha and of course the goalscoring machine that was Ronaldo Luíz Nazário. But 2018 has given birth to a new player, Pedro Guilherme Abreu dos Santos. Call him Pedro.

He may have learnt that same style of football, have the same quick feet and be able to conjure something from nothing, but he is different. At over 6ft tall, he offers an aerial presence not often associated with Brazilian footballers.

Another thing, Pedro is rather adept at finishing his chances, very adept in fact. His killer instincts have landed him with exceptional figures. Twelve goals from twenty-one games at 21 years of age is not something to bat an eye at. The figures are marvellous but it’s his style of play that truly enthrals the Tricolor faithful.

I highly recommend that you watch this…

Pace and power. Unbeatable. The way the ball is just glued to his feet makes him incredible to watch. Pedro is without a doubt one of the brightest players to emerge from Brazil since a certain Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior departed Santos in 2013. Seeing him on Europe’s grand stage would be a pleasure for anyone who buys a ticket…

Fourteen goal contributions in twenty-one games including a very important brace against Sport Recife has helped a struggling Fluminense side escape relegation trouble and his huge contribution has certainly not gone under the radar. In fact, Tite has even included Pedro in the Seleção, a major feat for the 21-year-old. He may be shadowing Firmino, but if given the minutes, he will show why Brazil’s boss was right to select him. Plus, his aerial prowess gives the Canarinho another option should they need a breakthrough.

GOL: Halfway into the season and Pedro already has 10 league goals from 16 games.

It makes you giddy to think what Pedro could become. His dazzling flicks and merciless finishing has opposition defences quaking before he even graces the pitch. If Pedro’s links to Bordeaux are true and Thierry Henry does take charge, one word: Glorious.

€17m would break Bordeaux’s transfer record, but it would certainly be worth it…
